A very good friend of mine is the only offspring of one of Bowie's best friends (some of you could probably narrow it down if you were so inclined). He's in a European country consulting on a film about their lives right now. He found out about his death within an hour, and he didn't even know how bad his cancer had gotten. My friend gave the opening speech at the new record release party and everything. As much as some of us are mourning, I can't imagine what it must be like for those close to him... he was such a brilliant man.

Sure you can. But when it's bullshit, don't complain that that is pointed out. Your opinion is not privileged, and in this case, that is doubly true because it relies on selective quotes and (probably deliberate) misinterpretation.

Third, the only organisation with the power to do any of this is the International Astronomical Union. You can't do it just by registering it on the internet.

In short - yes, it would be a lovely tribute. Just don't swallow the snakeoil about it.
