I agree with the red herring. Most European countries don't even allow people to possess firearm without passing several tests. And you need a cause. You can't get a gun because you feel you might need protection some day, you need to have reason why you might be in danger constantly. Obviously, cops and soldiers are authorized to have guns. I don't think there's any dictatorship here.

You shouldn't need to explain a need for owning a gun. Mortal enemies are made much faster than the bureaucratic issuing of gun licenses, so if you think you are just so good at making friends that future enemies are impossible for you as your interests clash up against this world, then I hope for your sake that you don't lose that delusion the hard way.

Uuuuh..more than just "a few".  Remember, we've had some guns banned before.  Didn't work, they didn't even ban the guns they set out to ban (gun banners don't seem to know much about guns).

Far as humanity and empathy for those outside one's tiny world bubble goes, I have experienced how well this works in New York's crowded asshole, and all I can say is it really stinks.
