AF Members with Kids, Whatcha Think?

I think that this strongly influences the relationship to meals (not seeing them as something that you receive and have to accept passively). I remember not liking whole grain stuff, but when my mum spent a weekend baking stuff together with me, I was pretty fascinated by it and, of course, eagerly ate the products of my work.

That's a great idea. Another thing we did was feed our son off our plates as soon as possible, finely dicing it for his little teeth.

Because I always cooked fresh vegetables with each meal, he got a taste for them early. He still thinks of flatbread, cherry tomatoes, and hummus as the perfect snack. Smile

We have food rules in our house. You must try 3 bites of something new before you can say you don't like it. The alternative is a PBJ that you make on your own and no dessert. Very rarely do they make a PBJ. We don't ask them to eat their food. We've set a precedent of what is expected and they know the repercussions. It's not mean, it sets them up for reality. There are rules and consequences. Same as in life. Kids need limits, boundaries and expectations set and need to earn expansions to those boundaries. We are not rigid by any means. We maintain flexibility and open dialog. Haven't had a real problem yet, but teen years are quickly approaching. Smile
We are not made happy by what we acquire but by what we appreciate.

PBJs as a disciplinary measure? Oh the humanity! Smile

There's actually data for that, but I can't look it up right at the moment - maybe google rising IQ levels.

I love this. The sooner they're taught that all actions have consequences, the better.

I know too many people in my own generation who still don't understand this.

Alex -

I agree. I was 8 when my brother was born so I had to start learning to cook early to help out, but I was futzing around in the kitchen before that. To this day, so far we've only found 5 things I hate, and I've hated them all my life so I can only assume it's a body chemistry thing. (Mushrooms, asparagus, shrimp, tentacled things, and raw fish)

mushrooms as in all kinds of fungi?

I couldn't eat fish without gagging for as long as I can think, but seafood is the only no no for me that I know of. (ofc I am vegetarian now, but not bc I didn't like it)

Oh girl, I'm so sorry you've fallen away from asparagus, mushrooms and raw fish.  (Shrimp is ho hum for me but I've never enjoyed the mouth-feel of tentacled things either.)  But Asparagus is like one of the very best vegetables going.  Some day, when you return to them, you will weep for all the years lost for eating them.

Raw fish goes without saying, but there are plenty of good sushi rolls which are vegetable only.
Mushrooms I guess you know are many and varied.  A good shiitake mushroom cooked just right can taste like steak.    And chanterelles added to so many things just exude flavor.  I never buy or use button mushrooms and if they come in a salad I feel cheated, nearly cardboard on the flavor-meter.

From one of the links contained therein.  I knew there was something alien about children.......

Quote:The food writer and historian Margaret Visser has written that the presence of taste buds on the insides of young children’s cheeks may actually help explain why kids seem to enjoy stuffing their mouths with food: they are tasting.
