Whaaa?

Those are five awesome things. Calamari, soosh, and skrimps are amazing. And mushrooms and asparagus, tsk tsk.

Don't want to give Summer a complex here.  Let's see, what would my terrible big five list of undelicious foods be?

I HATE these foods:

1)  lima beans;

2)  mayo out of a jar;

3)  most organ meats;

4)  canned peas;

and 5) what the hell, lets leave tentacled things on the list.

This might make for an interesting thread.

I think that this strongly influences the relationship to meals (not seeing them as something that you receive and have to accept passively). I remember not liking whole grain stuff, but when my mum spent a weekend baking stuff together with me, I was pretty fascinated by it and, of course, eagerly ate the products of my work.

That's a great idea. Another thing we did was feed our son off our plates as soon as possible, finely dicing it for his little teeth.

Because I always cooked fresh vegetables with each meal, he got a taste for them early. He still thinks of flatbread, cherry tomatoes, and hummus as the perfect snack. Smile

I have no issues with my kids eating what I've made. I didn't make a big production out of mealtime when they were small. I simply put the food in front of them and they ate it. I also ate with them when they were little. I think a lot of the time, when kids are young, they eat alone. Not dinner, mind you, but.lunch, for instance. Parents make lunch for the little ones and the kids eat alone. Personally, I ate with my crew. They saw I was eating what they were eating, there was no problem.

As a result, my kids love Brussels sprouts, Lima beans, onions and other foods typically not liked by some kids.

I am not a short order cook. I make what I make for dinner and if the family doesn't want to eat it, they go hungry. They are all old enough to make their own lunch and breakfast, but I like cooking breakfast, so every weekend, they have the option of a hot breakfast made by mom, or making themselves cereal.

The tl;Dr version: it isn't that hard to get them to eat when you don't make a big deal out of it.

You're a lot like my wife and my stepson has always liked pretty much everything and is an excellent cook himself.  He avoids bananas because they were foisted on him while he was recovering from a bad burn as a baby.  He also avoids shit like carbonated drinks which still appeal to me.  And while he likes occasional sweets they don't have the same sway over him as they have over me.

I will take that as a compliment. I'm also an excellent cook and baker. My kids drool over my fried chicken, lasagna and my eggplant Parmesan. There are rarely any leftovers in my house.

I have 3 kids and each has his own likes and dislikes.
One doesn't like banana.
The other doesn't care for most desserts!! O.o
The other doesn't like salad.

Heck... as long as they eat other things, I'm ok.
As Portuguese, we have soup as a starter for every meal, so they get their veggies from there.

Once in a while, they get to misbehave during the meal, prodding each other or just being annoying... that's when the responsible party gets sent to the kitchen, to eat by himself, standing... sometimes, another gets a ticket to a similar punishment... but he can't go to the already occupied kitchen, so my wife threatens with the bathroom (the kids are oddly thrilled by that notion).

It's quite difficult in our house at meal times, we have two meat eaters and four vegetarians.

Just cooking two different meals all the time is a pain, so the meat eaters usually lose out and end up eating pretend meat.
