CD, Were they all mechanical faults?
I can understand not risking going near a leaking nuke sub. Or was it mainly an issue of depth?

I was watching the launch on TV, just sitting open mouthed at the screen. I later heard that the engineers from Morton Thiocol who made the solid fuel boosters warned NASA not to launch at the low temperatures as the rubber sealing rings could get brittle ... they didn't listen.

There was a memorial service for the Challenger crew some time later and there was a helicopter over the ocean offshore from the cape and they dropped a wreath in the water. Just then some dolphins broke the surface near the wreath and it was like they were paying their respects too.
Didn't take much to choke me up then, and that certainly did it.
For months after the accident, we had daily updates on the investigation and the search for the bodies and the important pieces of wreckage. It was rough when they pulled up a piece with the rescue directions on it for the hatch.
The granting of a pardon is an imputation of guilt, and the acceptance a confession of it.

St Joseph's RC School, I was 7, do remember seeing on the news, also Chernobyl.
This also happens to be the year I became an atheist.

Frankly, I can't remember where I were. It wasn't that important news in Europe at the time, way before the internet.
Chernobyl though is a different matter entirely. I could give you an exact timeline from the day it exploded to the point when the story went big and people started to go hysterical in places, since these were rainy days and some feared the fallout.

For those that experienced Chernobyl, do you know anyone personally that suffered fallout consequences? We had a woman in our corporation that had secondary thyroid cancer. Can't remember exactly where she was from.

No, I don't know any. Only what was in the news in decades past the event.
