BOTH, I think most humans don't understand their empathy is in them, not their label so they end up doing good things for completely false reasons and that ends up as a competition to claim a patent on the word "good".

Our species ability to be cruel or compassionate is in our evolution, not the human invented religions or god claims we invent.
