Feel the Bern!!!
RE: Feel the Bern!!!
I just read this on George Takei's FB page.
A bumpersticker says:
"Bernie Sanders isn't a rabble-rousing, Jewish Socialist who used to work as a carpenter. You're thinking of Jesus."
Reply
"I keep seeing people comparing Bernie and Jesus. I mean he sounds like a good guy, but he's no Bernie Sanders."

Brilliant! lol.

Wasn't it a "They Live!" reference?

Well the Duke Nuke 'Em quote is a paraphrasing from that movie, but the quote EP did was closer to the Duke Nuke 'Em version and the Duke Nuke 'Em version is actually more well known than the original movie quote, lol.

It's known as "The Weird Al" effect, when the parody becomes more well known than the original.

This is Duke Nukem version:

This is They live version:

How exactly is my version more like the first one then the second one? And it's not my version, I merely adjusted Sterben's to sound more like the original version. As it is, his sounded like neither.

Because you said "Kick ass and chew bubble gum" instead of "chew bubble gum and kick ass", you said it the Duke way around, which rolls off the tongue better and is easier to say.

You know what I meant. Now you're just being pedantic. I'm saying your paraphrasing of either quote seemed more like Duke's version... which is a good thing I think because Duke's is punchier.

And because he's a demigod of FPS.

I'm not trying to be difficult here, Evie, I'm just trying to be accurate. I'm sorry if I came off as too argumentative, but there's an actual argument to be had here and we won't resolve it by tiptoeing around it.

They Live version, word for word: I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass... And I'm all out of bubblegum.

What Sterben said: He is kicking ass and chewing bubble gum and he's all out of gum.

My correction of him: He came to kick ass and chew bubble gum, and he's all out of bubblegum.

Duke Nukem version: It's time to kick ass and chew bubble gum, and I'm all out of gum.

And now, together, for comparison:

  1. I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass... And I'm all out of bubblegum.
  2. He is kicking ass and chewing bubble gum and he's all out of gum.
  3. He came to kick ass and chew bubble gum, and he's all out of bubblegum.
  4. It's time to kick ass and chew bubble gum, and I'm all out of gum.
Sterben's version(2) is like neither the Dukem one(4) or the They Live one(1). My correction(3) is more like the They Live one(1) and not like the Dukem one(4).

You'll notice you mentioned kicking ass first and chewing bubbleguum second, like the Duke version does, whereas the They Live version mentions chewing bubblegum first and kicking ass second.

Not every disagreement is worth arguing about, no one is wrong here because on the one hand what you said (and what Sterben said too) is more like Duke's version because you said it in the same order that Duke does, but on the other hand yours was closer to the original because you said "came here to" instead of "it's time to".

I said it the Duke way in that sense merely because he said it like that, not because I prefer the Duke version over the original one. I only corrected him because the way he put it was like neither version and so didn't really work as a reference to anything.

Dude, the order in which he said kicking ass and chewing bubblegum is irrelevant. You can put those in whichever order you like and it doesn't bear on whether the sentence makes sense or not, in light of the reference(whichever reference you prefer, it doesn't matter). But the way Sterben put it was wrong because of what it meant, not how it sounded. I took issue with the meaning, not the rolling off the tongue thing.

I'm not looking to prove anyone "wrong" exactly, I'm merely concerned with what is a good phrasing of this expression so that it successfully traces back to either reference you prefer(it doesn't matter which one you do).

Fuck, we're still derailing this after the OP specifically complained about it...

I'm sorry, BQ.
