He doesn't stop being a homo sapiens sapiens, a social animal species, even if he decides to live the hermit life. I'm sure we can go on all day pulling up specific exceptions to and examples of the model. That's why I used the airquotes aroiund the word 'purpose'; it's a very loose human construct to explain - or excuse - the reasons why we do the things we do.

Then you're not saying anything different from what I meant.
"Of course, everyone will claim they respect someone who tries to speak the truth, but in reality, this is a rare quality. Most respect those who speak truths they agree with, and their respect for the speaking only extends as far as their realm of personal agreement. It is less common, almost to the point of becoming a saintly virtue, that someone truly respects and loves the truth seeker, even when their conclusions differ wildly."

Great - we agree. I'm surprised that you're surprised. I hope you didn't paint a beardy face on it though, because that's the point on which we don't agree. But you wouldn't do that, would you?
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist.  This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair.  Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second.  That means there's a situation vacant.'

I think "purpose" is subjective. You need to establish some sort of viewpoint or criteria. Something may have purpose from one perspective and not from another.

It's consistent that we could have some external purpose, to another being, like we're part of some weird experiment. There's no way to tell. And I don't much care if we are, it doesn't change anything.

I find I have several purposes, others may differ:

1. To read good books.

2. To cultivate fulfilling relationships.

3. To take seriously only serious things.

4. To stay away from horses.

(The above list is not meant to be exhaustive.)

Practice makes perfect. Even if I'm you're only rehearsing a solo.
