I wanted to share this with you, as its a big deal to me. I think it will also be a big deal to a lot of other people.
Eating out for me is really difficult, mostly because I'm vegan. Trying to get a meal somewhere usually involves long conversations with the staff, heavily modified or reduced dishes, and more stress than is reasonable. Sometimes I can't get anything at all. So I was delighted to find out that Zizzi's now have an "allergy menu", which covers those with gluten allergies, as well as a vegan menu which also helps people with dairy allergies. It's an Italian style restaurant.
Instead of the generall half-arse approach, they've done it properly. They've advertised it, the waiter was well informed about it, and the food was fucking awesome! I went to one yesterday for my early birthday celebration, and I was able to order a pizza and garlic bread. Just like that! And then even some desert. No questions required, no being treated like a freak. I was a normal person, for once.
And boy, were they good! I'm pretty sure they make it from scratch, the "cheese" on the pizza (which doesn't even have soya in, for those with soya allergies!) was melted just lovely, and was creamy and delicious. The garlic bread which is usually never vegan was scrumptious.
I'm hoping that a big chain like this making a bold move will stir others into action, notably Pizza Hut which don't offer a dairy free pizza, nor will they let me bring my own cheese in. There are probably way more people with dairy, gluten and soya allergies than us vegans, but we should all be able to sit down in a restaurant and order stuff without going through an interrogation process.
This is great, and I hope the word is spread far and wide! They still have all the usual stuff they've always had as well of course. Just alternatives for those with different diets!
