I was lucky enough to have passed just before they brought in the theory test.
The down side is I don't know what any of those fucking road signs mean

Well I got a perfect score on my written one. The actual driving was the problem

They are called "accidents" for a reason. I used to be an auto claims adjuster for St*te F*rm, I've reviewed thousands of claims. ~99.99% were in the "shit happens" category. You operated under your best understanding of the situation, just as anybody else would.

I've actually never taken any kind of a driving test, ever. In NI, I had a mate who worked at the DVA and his hooked me up with a license, all nice and legal (except for the testing). When I emigrated to New Zealand, my license was current, so all I had to do was pay the application fee to transfer to a NZ license - no testing involved.

Definitely get a new instructor. It's normal for learners to make deadly mistakes, that's why they have a big L on the roof so people are supposed to slow down.
I sort of did the same thing as you, I pushed the break by accident and we came to a sudden stop and a guy speeding behind us had to swerve and my instructor went crazy at me, telling me I almost cost him his livelihood, I quit learning to drive for years after that until relatively recently I tried again and then passed my test first time.
Are you ready for the fire? We are firemen. WE ARE FIREMEN! The heat doesn’t bother us. We live in the heat. We train in the heat. It tells us that we’re ready, we’re at home, we’re where we’re supposed to be. Flames don’t intimidate us. What do we do? We control the flame. We control them. We move the flames where we want to. And then we extinguish them.

When I was in high school drivers ed a delivery truck suddenly started backing out of a driveway right ahead of me. It was too late to jab the brakes, so I did a hard left and got around him without getting touched.
I think the instructor froze or something, he never hit his brake pedal, and it's a good thing or we would have been clobbered. Still, he wasn't real happy, but I didn't get a ding either.
As for the OP, it's driver's ed, just keep driving, you'll get better with practice. People make excited utterances all the time, your instructor is pretty tepid compared to what my dad would have said, LOL.
"JUDAS FUCKING PRIEST !!! WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING ?!?!?!?" would have just been the start of it.

If the guy was much of an instructor he would have stopped you from proceeding in the first place. He didn't catch it either and deflected the blame to you. The fault lies with the both of you. Even then, no big deal.
If this is the worst driving incident you're ever involved in you'll be very lucky. What's the car bumper sticker say, "SHIT HAPPENS!". Chalk this up to a learning experience and move on. No one was hurt. No damage was done. Bet you never mistake a two way for a four way again. But watch out for the three ways. They confuse the best of drivers.
Get back on that horse!

Glad you're okay. Scary events like that can stick with you for a while, however, no one got hurt and this will be a valuable lesson for you in the future.
The instructor was over the top telling you that you could have killed someone, but given that none of us were in the car to see how fast the other guy was driving, it very well could have been more than just a fender bender.
I was at a two way stop sign 23 years ago. Cross street traffic didn't have to stop, so they had the right of way. I looked left, right then left again and proceeded to cross. Had the car that was flying down the road not been traveling twice the speed limit, I could have made it across safely. When I saw him, he was far enough away so that I felt it was okay to cross. He hit my right front quarter panel at 60 miles an hour (speed limit was 30). This cause my car to face to the left and because he still had so much momentum, he then ass-ended me.
My seat belt broke with the first impact causing me to fly out of my seat to the passengers side where I busted out the side window with my head. When he ass-ended me, I almost went through the windshield. My car ended up over a curb and down into a ravine. It wasn't pretty. The guy tried going after my drivers license claiming that I cut him off, but his 40 feet worth of skidmarks prior to the impact were proof that he was indeed going twice the speed limit. He was heavily fined and walked away without a scratch, while I have had life long back, hip and knee issues. I've also shrunk two inches due to the seven discs in my lower back that were herniated from that accident.
Three years ago my car thought it could fly when we had a freak snow storm in late March. Basically, my car skidded off the road, jumped a concrete barrier for a large drainage pipe and landed 70 feet from where it took off. I wasn't hurt, but my air bags failed to deploy when my front end hit the ground first.

When there's danger involved, signaled by a rush of adrenaline, your brain marks those events for special processing. It's a way of making sure that you learn important lessons. As a result, it will be very current and distressing in your mind for a seemingly long time. However it will fade with time. Stress may cause you to remember this time, such as other near accidents, but those times will fade rather fast. Just give it time and you'll get over it. It may be distressing until you do, but that's kind of the point.
