It becomes really painful when someone claims to believe the bible literally and accept science. How their brain doesn't explode, I don't know. There's always the possibility they are not being truthful, though. Some people probably like the idea of taking it literally, and like saying it, even if they don't actually believe it. Maybe they are scared to admit otherwise in case God hears.

Human gets cancer, is treated and dies = god had an unknown plan.

Human is in a car accident and lives = god was with them.
Human is in a car accident and dies = god wanted them in heaven.

Human is hit with a ton of bricks and lives = god protected them.
Human is hit with a ton of bricks and dies = monty python.
