In the USA, every wayward preacher feeling like it could found his very own church and sell his very own brand of snake oil there. I guess that's why religion hasn't experienced the same kind of downwards trend there. Now it does, with the arrival of a younger generation and new media. But not to the same extent as in most European countries. I guess, and I stress again, that's only my personal observation, if there had been a state religion established in the USA, things would be looking differently.
I agree. Tying a thing to government is the kiss of death. I still shudder at the thought of state-sponsored religion in America. We're losing our religion as it is - even if we envy the rate you guys across the pond have lost it.
Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former.

I had no idea that Denmark had you opted-in to a church tax. That's so fucked up, they deserve an exodus.
