Will modern society slow the progress of change?
May 4, 2016 at 10:38 pm
Just quick little prose.
Everyone in history that has made a dramatic change has done so by going upstream. Against generally held belief, and many times these revolutionaries have burned at the stakes because of it. However modern society is moving in the direction of being more tolerant toward outsiders, hell, ironically now a-days "outsiders" are the most respected people, and people want to be different than others.
Do you think this acceptance of difference will slow revolutionary change? I'm not saying that an accepting society is a bad thing, not at all, but simply saying that the pattern of history is that change has come from society rejecting ideas that weren't popularly held. Look at Charles Darwin, he was afraid for years and years to release his theories, because of fear of public reaction. Is it possible that knowing your ideas are outcast motivates one to further investigate them?
What are your thoughts. I remind you that I am making no definitive statements about what is true and what isn't true but merely posing a question to spark discussion about a common pattern throughout history that I observed.
Which is better:
To die with ignorance, or to live with intelligence?
Truth doesn't accommodate to personal opinions.
The choice is yours.

Like who? And what do you consider to be "dramatic" change?

He probably means people like Copernicus, etc
If anything, without these superstitious backwards social beliefs, progress will be as quick as the technology will allow.

People are more accepting of outsiders? Sounds like a first world perspective to me.

Which acceptance exactly? We're quickly regressing to primitive tribalism. In the wake of the global economic crisis and the refugee problem.
Also, what revolutionary changes are we talking about? Other than some changes to make war more effective during the last century, with the side effect of benefitting humanity afterwards, there have been none. It has always been a slow process.

It seems, to me, that this kind of society will foster progress not slow it down. Before people had to go upstream now it's easier than ever to have new ideas. And when you're super smart you can give your entire life to discovering if you want, because you won't be burned at the stake

Religion halts change and even slows down progress removing that from the equation we would have been even more advanced now
without religion. But even then religion played a role in science and mathematics so the cut off date of religion would have to be around
when science itself was being snuffed out for superstition.

I think the logic in this post is a little all over the place. I'm not totally discounting your point but.....
How can an outside be more respected than people of mainstream opinions? Mainstream opinions are respected by most people because most people have those opinions.
If you're an outsider you're more likely to find an audience for your outside the box opinions on the internet but you will still be in the minority.
I find your idea pretty confusing really, and unmeasurable and vague.
I think it was observable evidence that made Charles Darwin investigate the possibility of evolution, I don't think he was just trying to be a rebel.
Are you ready for the fire? We are firemen. WE ARE FIREMEN! The heat doesn’t bother us. We live in the heat. We train in the heat. It tells us that we’re ready, we’re at home, we’re where we’re supposed to be. Flames don’t intimidate us. What do we do? We control the flame. We control them. We move the flames where we want to. And then we extinguish them.
Impersonation is treason.

When it comes to change, we haven't seen anything yet.

I will be disappointed if it comes to the point where you will not be required to have too much evidence for your idea to accepted.
Of course, people will always be able to question it and prove it wrong, and I think that they will be encouraged to do so.
