Trying to equate the Republican and Democrats of the late 1800's to what each party represents in the mid to late 1900's and this century, is disingenuous, at best. 

It is a historical fact that the more Republicans voted for the 1964 civil rights act that Democrats. That's 1964, my friend.

Of course without Johnson the Republitards would never have voted to end segregation, because by 1964 they were well on their way to being the party to implement the southern strategy, and absorbing the dixiecrats as eny fule kno.

In American politics, the Southern strategy refers to a strategy by Republican Party candidates of gaining political support in the Southern United States by appealing to disaffected white southerners, many of whom were originally Democratic voters.

In the USA at least the history of institutionalized slavery and segregation required unique federal action by Republicans to remove the racist policies of the states dominated by Democrats.

The history of high taxation in America peaked during the Eisenhower administration. I bet you don't count that as a Repubican feather, though ... it doesn't fit into your filters.
