LoTR is taken seriously because of the strong characters and story, where as Avatar isn't because it's basically just a bunch of eye candy with a basic plot about colonialism bad and environmentalism good. Star Trek on the other hand is taken very seriously because of, well, the commentary, philosophy, science, and utopian outlook of the future. Where as Twilight is hated because it's a sappy chick flick.

I went to Avatar for the eye-candy. I gave up on seeing anything original about 1966.

There's only so many stories, tropes, and cliches that can be done before everyone else starts stealing them, and only so many character types before they're all used up too. Originality in today's media is impossible.

Event Horizon is very underrated, IMO.
The Abyss is another of my favorite sci-fi flicks.
