As a Christian, I ardently argue with other Christians that we are NOT a Christian Nation.  We were founded by a diverse group of men (Christians, Catholics, Deists, Quakers, etc) and while some of our founding ideologies have roots in Christianity, the founders made it abundantly clear that we are a nation where the people are free to believe what they choose.  There is little doubt that this country was founded by religious men as there are four references to God in the Declaration of Independence alone, but we are NOT a Christian Nation.

I would argue whether Deism really counts as "religious", and I'm not a constitutional scholar, but some of those references to God might come from that source.

I won't argue with you on that as I don't think Deism is religious but I included it as there were founders who were classified as Deists to show the diversity in the beliefs of the founders (not all were religious zealots even though many were pastors).  Regardless, you have a diverse groups of religious believers who firmly believed the governing body of the nation should hold no sway on what people choose to believe.

A court in Qatar has convicted a Dutch woman of having sex outside marriage after she told police she was raped.

The 22-year-old was handed a suspended sentence and fined $824 (£580). She will also be deported.

Her lawyer said her drink had been spiked at a Doha hotel in March and she had woken up in a stranger's flat, where she realised she had been raped.

Her alleged attacker, who said the sex was consensual, was sentenced to 100 lashes for having sex outside marriage.

He will be given a further 40 lashes for consuming alcohol.

By todays standards many of them would be atheists, I gather, based on there own quotes. They just didn't have anything to compare religious doctrines against, as we have today. So they were deists.

I don't doubt that and some may even have been agnostic even at that time.  But the point was despite the beliefs of the founders of our government they were very clear that the government has no authority over the beliefs of its people.

Do moderate Muslims practice Sharia law? Or should I go ahead and lump Qatar in with the rest of the loonies? I'm having a difficult time with the distinction these days.
