I do like to think the brits sent a division of tanks to help stimbonator keep going. It helps me living with myself
Claims are not evidence.
They may believe it but doesn't mean we should on their say so. But we know that a dying brain floods the body with chemicals and that those chemicals can cause hallucinations. Change the scenario. A well known and respected Christian leader has an NDE and then states that the Hindus are right and converts. Would you accept that claim and give up Christianity or would you assume it's just an hallucination? Playing Cluedo with my mum while I was at Uni: "You did WHAT? With WHO? WHERE???" NDEs are evidence of nothing, except the fact that stupid people, who want to live forever will grasp at anything...

I wouldn't consider someone who was suffering oxygen deprivation to the brain the most reliable witness, and would insist on objective evidence.
Brain chemistry. It's what's for dinner.

No, of course I wouldn't believe them.
As per everybody else who vote I chose C. A respected member saying they had an NDE is still an unverified, untested anecdote and is valueless without supporting data that can be falsified and replicated.
Oh and the "respected" bit: Appeal to authority.

We often lie to people when we think it's for their own good.
Little things like, 'am I ugly, fat, annoying?', etc. We might say no or use less demeaning terms, but we lie for their benefit. Imagine what lies people might tell to save a person from burning forever. The best way to feel no guilt over lying is to simply start believing it. Especially if you've been told similar lies by others and have believed them. No damage done. The lie becomes easier to tell. It's not nice to call someone a liar so we automatically think of situations that is beyond a person's control and doesn't involve a defect in their personality. Hallucination. Very diplomatic. So, in answer to your question Little Rik, no, I would not become a theist based on the testimony of an ex-atheist. Nor would I automatically assume they had an hallucination. I wouldn't think of them as a bad person either, but I would consider their testimonies dangerous for children. |
