UK to leave EU
RE: UK to leave EU
Quote:The Dos Santos claim argues: “The result of the referendum is not legally binding in the sense that it is advisory only and there is no obligation [on the government] to give effect to the referendum decision.

“However, the [previous] prime minister has stated on numerous occasions that it is his intention to give effect to the referendum decision and organise the United Kingdom’s withdrawal from the European Union.

Right. Sort it out you numpties.

I don't really care what Cameron's intention was, since he has resigned his ass. Also, he may not have had the authority anyway it seems. I think it's fair to say most of Britain actually wants to remain now, so to allow it just to let the previous result stand is extremely stupid, IMO. Even if just over half want to leave, that's balls. They shouldn't get to wreck everything.

Unfortunately - it would also be very "British"...

What's more likely is that Brexit will take years, with all the politicians dragging their feet, not willing to eat the heap of sh*t, that the next few years after triggering Article 50 will be. I think legal distractions will just make it longer and play right into the hands of the current government, who may be hoping, that other countries will decide to also leave EU in the meantime, making negotiations potentially easier. However a prolonged state of financial and legal uncertainty is no good for anyone.

Time to call bullshit on it. It is advisory, fuck what Cameron said, he was making promises above his station. He already went back on it. <60% should be enough to say the public don't want it enough to justify it. Not that I think the public's opinion should be valued very much anyway on this issue.

My wife says "there will be riots".

I don't know. Maybe people would be stupid enough to riot. But you can't make political decisions based on threats of rioting.

Yeah but it would be old baby boomers rioting by muttering loudly and waving placards that said "Down with this sort of thing".

And I'll piss myself laughing and celebrate massively when it doesn't get cancelled. I'll also celebrate massively in December 2018.   Wink

The longer the UK waits the harder the EU will hit them. All that fuckacting will piss off the EU side massively.

Oh and a long wait will probably cool down sentiments for leave elsewhere, as people will rightfully interpret it as a "oh fuck, what have we done?" reaction.

Unless it isn't a Brexit but a waenirexit ...

I find Theresa May's visit to Scotland interesting. She's definitely more canny than David Cameron or David Mundell who just ignore Scotland or assume that the Scots will know their place. She's planning several moves ahead. She must know that there is no way that she can achieve an agreement on Brexit from all corners of the UK. Nicola Sturgeon won't and can't in any way agree on leaving the EU. The EU won't allow Scotland to stay part of the UK and the EU. What Theresa May is doing is making herself look as reasonable as possible while trying to position Nicola Sturgeon into looking unreasonable when she doesn't agree to a Brexit. The intention is to mollify anger at Westminster during a second independence referendum and try to cast blame on Sturgeon.

I have no doubt that the SNP know exactly what her game is but need to play along because they need to show that they are looking at all options.
