A proper departure from the European Union is not likely to happen. I get the feeling that May and her friends will stab us in the back by eventually settling for a 'soft' Brexit and we don't really have the right attitude in the UK for standing up to governments that mess us about.

It is absolutely tragic to be honest with you but that's how it is. I would be pleasantly surprised if a 'hard' Brexit does happen but I remain pessimistic.

You are right to be sceptical about what politicians promise but in this case both May and the European Union want a hard Brexit.

That's why the UK is screwed.

Actually I want a hard Brexit too. I want it to really hurt sooner rather than later. That will mean that the UK is more likely to come back to the EU once the baby boomers die off rather than people getting used to the pain over time. I don't want to see the UK become a vassal state of the US.

I like Brexit hard, like my men.

In all seriousness though, I think we are fucked.

I really don't feel like arguing with you. "Red, white and blue Brexit" is her way of supporting a 'soft' Brexit, so basically remaining part of the EU in all but name.

Red white and blue Brexit is a meaningless phrase that anyone can read anything into.

No. It was her way of saying nothing of substance, so that everyone - especially dim people, fond of nationalistic symbolism - could interpret her words however they like. Not that phrases like "soft Brexit", or "hard Brexit" have much meaning anyway. Nobody knows how what will be the outcome of the whole thing, because - as I said - nobody planned for it.

One thing is for certain - pretty much nobody will be happy. "Remainers" will be upset, because of the loss of many benefits associated with EU membership, and "Leavers" will be p*ssed off, because what they wanted was a nostalgic fantasy, which - obviously - was never going to come true.

LOL... Yeah, you wish. And if you don't - you're going to. UK will very likely still be closely tied to EU, but it's going to lose much more than just the "EU member" title. Preferential treatment, a voice in EU Parliament, free access to the common market, possibly Scotland - those are just a few things that come to mind.

It's a good thing you're mentally preparing yourself for butt-hurt, because that's going to happen - one way or another. And it's lucky for you, that you have a scapegoat ready, so it'll be some time before you have to face the fact, that Brexit was a stupid idea and UK would have been better off without going through the whole debacle.

A possible blow to Nicola's campaign.

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/pol...72956.html

Quote:An independent Scotland would join a queue of would-be EU members, a senior European official has said.

Jacqueline Minor, the head of representation for the European Commission in the UK, said if Scotland became independent and wanted to join the EU it would be added to the list of candidate countries including Montenegro, Serbia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Speaking at a Scottish Parliamentary Journalists' Association event in Edinburgh, she said: “Were Scotland to become independent, they would join that list.”

She added though that it might be easier for Scotland to meet membership criteria such as democracy, rule of law, anti-corruption and protection of minorities than other candidates.

Ms Minor also poured cold water on Scotland's ability to secure a special deal in Brexit negotiations.

Truth is that no one actually knows. It's an unprecedented situation. The laws don't specify what to do so each official is interpreting it in their own way.

It will be a negotiation on both sides. The best thing to do is to look at each side's motives. The EU want to punish the UK for Brexit to dissuade other countries from leaving and the threat of the breakup of the UK would mean that they can say to other countries that it wasn't good for the UK to leave. On the other hand they don't want Scotland to get the unfair deal that the UK had so they don't want to make it look like they can take things for granted. On the other hand they wouldn't want to discourage the independence movement. Although a country like Spain would because of Catalonia.

One thing that would help Scotland though is that has already met all the conditions to be part of the EU, all its laws are in compliance. The other countries applying to join have to go through the long process of changing their laws to fit. There is no reason why there has to be a sequential queue. Each application to join the EU can be done, and should be. After all what if one country that applies first holds up every other country that is no ready to join? This then suggests that talk of being at the back of the queue is meant to encourage / discourage rather than actually reflects reality.
