And I can't stop playing minecraft. I like these sandbox type games too much. Yes, I'm addicted. Yes, it's all my kids' fault. They started it.

You get the response error when you're on a server, or in sp? If sp, you need to dump resource hogging mods, particularly mods like CC, extra mobs, chunk limit extension, etc.
(or, conversely, play on a server with better specs than your own laptops cpu)

I have this problem with my Desktop AIO, It's already been to the computer guy once and he was fascinated as the inside is fully capable of expanding memory and things can be replaced inside of it even though it is very similar to a laptop. OTOH.....how much have you allocated to minecraft? You familiar with the user config console ingame? 4g and it's still gonna stutter with mods installed. Leaks. - and it doesn't make full use of what memory you have by default.
(I can vouch for the FTB Direwolf modpack at 4gs...with -playable- hiccups, like when you have full automation at base and you're quarrying 4 chunks - too much ee, too many bees, refresh on your repeaters too fast, you'll still crash to desktop)
