Need help from the experienced gamers

You get the response error when you're on a server, or in sp?  If sp, you need to dump resource hogging mods, particularly mods like CC, extra mobs, chunk limit extension, etc.
(or, conversely, play on a server with better specs than your own laptops cpu)

what is sp?

The response error shows up at the very top of the window right next to where it says "minecraft"  I'll get this:

Minecraft (Not responding)
And then the computer either freezes up or it just gives me that lovely "thinking" icon instead of the mouse pointer.

Oh, and I can run regular stock minecraft but it lags too, just not as bad.

Do you happen to know what type of CPU and graphics it currently has?

Where would I find the graphics information? Like I need detailed instructions on how to find that.

SP-Single player.  When you host the game instance yourself, the mods can crush your cpu.  You can play with alot more mods installed if you don't have to host it locally.

OTOH.....how much have you allocated to minecraft?  You familiar with the user config console ingame?  4g and it's still gonna stutter with mods installed.  Leaks. - and it doesn't make full use of what memory you have by default.
(I can vouch for the FTB Direwolf modpack at 4gs...with -playable- hiccups, like when you have full automation at base and you're quarrying 4 chunks - too much ee, too many bees, refresh on your repeaters too fast, you'll still crash to desktop)

Sooooo...... the fix would be to get more memory? If so, I'll happily do that.

And honestly, no, I'm not familiar with the user config console ingame. If you're talking about going into options in the game, I don't know where that would be listed. I'm really stupid with these things and need a walk through in assisting me through this.

It's never a bad idea. That won't stop modded MC from crashing your computer though, not completely. Also, google "how to allocate memory to minecraft" because it won't matter how much memory you have if it's set to use 1g or somesuch nonsense..which it used to be, by default.

I always play single player. I don't get on any servers.

ATLauncher packs give you the option of creating a server, but I tried that and have no idea of how to get it from where it installed, to actually playing it. (I'd like for my kids to be able to be on the server with me so we can all play together)

Clearly, that is not an option right now. I'm more worried about how to resolve the lagging problem.

You don't need to - with that CPU, it's very unlikely it came with anything other than Intel integrated graphics.

I wanna cry.  I'm too stupid to do this by myself. When I run minecraft, I always make sure to close any other programs I was running, including skype. I has hoped that would help solve the issue.
