I get it from talking to teachers.  Why?  Do you believe students are just as well-behaved today?

Don't try to make a claim for me Lek, I'm asking you to back up your claim.  And you should know by now that anecdotes don't fly as 'evidence' on this forum.

See, was that so hard?  Could've just led with that instead of foisting a potential strawman on me.

I was presenting it as what seem to me to be a pretty universally accepted fact. If I say black people are discriminated against in the US, I'm normally not asked to show supporting data.

That's a pretty nice equivalency you got there... Either way, thanks for the article.

We live in a society that has changed a great deal from when our parents were children. I, personally have been spanked countless times plus slaps on the back of thighs, and guess what, just like my parents, it didn't do me any harm. However, I refused to spank my daughters because even though it is a parents duty, I couldn't bring myself to do it. On the otherhand, I don't care if my children are 12 and 13 years old respectively, if they merit a punishment, they will get it. I just send either both of them or just one of them (whoever is playing up at the time) to their rooms and take anything away from them i.e. tablet, laptops, telephones and give them a book to read and a duration of the punishment. I will come back in and I will explain as to why I had to punish them. Punishing a child without an explanation afterwards doesn't teach them anything. My most famous incident was when I promised to take my children to a large park in Paris for a few hours so they can enjoy themselves. My eldest crossed the line that morning, but I had to keep my promise. We all went to the park as if nothing happened and had the time of our lives, the rides, the ice-cream etc. When we finally got home, I had no need to say anything because my eldest went to her room. It was only for 45 minutes, and then we ate, and then watched a marathon episode of the Simpsons and we all laughed.

I thought the following was interesting, for consideration, discussing some of the studies:
https://www.sciencenews.org/blog/growth-...gh-emotion

I generally tend towards middle of the road approaches, and think that either extreme may be bad.  It can depend on the child, and what they react to best.   Does whatever disciplinary method just lead to more defiance, then it is probably is not correct in that instance.

I've heard suggestions, and tend to agree, that spanking shouldn't be an emotional reaction or out of frustration.  That spanking shouldn't be done alone (that is without understanding why or without talking with the child).  And I've seen parents, that refuse to spank, and had more problems because of it.  I've also heard the suggestion, that spanking should be restricted to acts of defiance, or lack of respect

The above citation, I think makes a good point, that there are so many variables to consider, and that a good control isn't feasible.  The problem is in studies that only point to the data, they want to highlight.

I was spanked frequently and sometimes severely. Otherwise struck a few times. I would say that the harm done included thinking it was okay to spank children (and did so, on a few occasions) for more than half my life. Probably factored into my poor social skills and shyness into my thirties.

RE: Religion and Spanking
My daughters are awfully outgoing for that to be any consistent effect of spanking, as I employ it, anyway.

Thankfully, there seems to be a point where sufficient dread has been instilled. I can't remember the last time I spanked my eldest. My youngest is just getting into getting spanked. Hopefully we get past the "daddy, look at all the creative ways I've found to kill myself and/or others today" phase. I'm on a withholding freindship, affection, privilege, and interaction kick now..with the older ones. Seems to work, but I sometimes wonder if it;s worse than spanking, for them..in the long run. I raised some awfully lovey and clingy kids. If I make it a point not to talk or even make eye contact with one of them you'd think I'd stabbed em in the gut.

Of course they are. Every generation thinks the one after theirs is worse and it's always a load of crap. Kids act out in different ways now than when you were a child. They have access to different technology and are (IMO) a lot smarter and more independent than kids probably were when you were young.

As far as spanking goes, I won't do it. I think it's terrible honestly. I would never hit a dog or a child or an elderly parent or a friend or a spouse to try and train them into behaving in a way that I find more pleasing.

You can't say it's always ineffective because that is not true. It's ineffective at teaching morals. If you slap a kid every time they stick their hand near the stove top they absolutely will learn not to do that action anymore. Or like my dad you could hold their hand uncomfortably close while threatening to press it against the hot burner and while that tends to cause more unecessary side effects it certainly works too.

Just because something works doesn't mean it's ok to do it.
