Our Long Lost Brothers....
the Neanderthals.

http://www.michaelshermer.com/2010/08/ou...-brethren/

Quote:Thus it is — revealing the identity of my example — that we must reclassify Homo neanderthalensis as Homo sapiens neanderthalensis, a subspecies of Homo sapiens. A comprehensive and technically sophisticated study published in the May 7 issue of Science, “A Draft Sequence of the Neandertal Genome,” by Max Planck Institute evolutionary anthropologists Richard E. Green, Svante Pääbo and 54 of their colleagues, demonstrates that “between 1 and 4% of the genomes of people in Eurasia are derived from Neandertals” and that “Neandertals are on average closer to individuals in Eurasia than to individuals in Africa.” In fact, the authors note, “a striking observation is that Neandertals are as closely related to a Chinese and Papuan individual as to a French individual…. Thus, the gene flow between Neandertals and modern humans that we detect most likely occurred before the divergence of Europeans, East Asians, and Papuans.” In other words, our anatomically hirsute cousins are actually our genetic brothers.

Why is that? This just confirms what creationists have always believed about Neanderthals.

His invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.

Excellent. I knew for awhile now that scientists were searching if this was possible. I'm surprised that we've uncovered this fact so quickly. It's absolutely fascinating that their species didn't completely die out, but instead is likely fully merged into modern humans.

It's absolutely astonishing that such a discovery (which doesn't appear to have really made much of a splash in the news - unsurprisingly) can so completely change just what it means to be human. Since I'm of european descent (because a cracker caucasian and all) that means that I too may also share that part of my genome with neaderthals.

Absolutely fascinating.
If today you can take a thing like evolution and make it a crime to teach in the public schools, tomorrow you can make it a crime to teach it in the private schools and next year you can make it a crime to teach it to the hustings or in the church. At the next session you may ban books and the newspapers...
Ignorance and fanaticism are ever busy and need feeding. Always feeding and gloating for more. Today it is the public school teachers; tomorrow the private. The next day the preachers and the lecturers, the magazines, the books, the newspapers. After a while, Your Honor, it is the setting of man against man and creed against creed until with flying banners and beating drums we are marching backward to the glorious ages of the sixteenth centry when bigots lighted fagots to burn the men who dared to bring any intelligence and enlightenment and culture to the human mind. ~Clarence Darrow, at the Scopes Monkey Trial, 1925

Politics is supposed to be the second-oldest profession. I have come to realize that it bears a very close resemblance to the first. ~Ronald Reagan

Fascinating! That was a really interesting read. It makes me wonder how many of other hominem sub groups are now part of our genome.

Thanks for sharing Min.

Could you please explain this rather rash comment?

According to genesis we were created in gods image. So where does this tie in with having genes from Neanderthals are part of our genome?

A 1000 years ago nobody new that Neanderthals had existed, yet you seem to be implying that creationists ALWAYS knew about them. Explain please.

Or is this just another example of desperately trying to make valid and provable science fit into a deluded world view.

The thing I have trouble with is that ...
IF we are made in "gods image" like our own children WE are capable of gods abilities

and

IF we are "children of god" then what of the old stag when the young stag is grown??
