Emergency Auxiliary Backup Cat #2 health scare

Oh, happy, happy, joy, joy.

Finally got home, managed to load the syringe with the (disturbing) goo, then had to hunt around to find the cat (he apparently got an idea I was going to do something he wasn't going to like much) and after I snagged him I commenced to injecting the food in.

Well, he wasn't thrilled with that much, and while not really resisting, he was cooperating at all.

Then at some point, we had quite a mess building up on me, and the cat was relieved I had briefly relented to reload the syringe, and then

we had a magic moment!!

he started licking up the slop that had spilled on me!!

So, realizing the cat liked the stuff, and was willing to eat it it without the syringe apparatus, I spooned out a largish blob onto a little paper plate, and away he went, just about inhaling it.  In just a few moments he had nailed half the can.  Figured that was a good place to stop, not sure if he is going to be barfy or not.

It's been a while, no barf, and he's sleeping it off now.

Condition wise, the eye shimmy has abated, even his pupils seem to be fairly well matched in size now.  He's holding his head at an angle still, right side down about 30 degrees still.  Walking while improved, is still punctuated with staggers and falls, although he gets further now.

We've turned the corner, he's getting better, and he's eating now.  I'll keep the antibiotics going and we'll head back to the vet on Saturday.

Yay!  ???

RE: Emergency Auxiliary Backup Cat #2 health scare
Have appt later this AM. Have already done morning antibiotics, ear drops, and pureed glorp.

Cat is sleeping off the over load now.

He's doing pretty well except for the head tilt and the staggering/falling down bit. It occurs to me he'll have to live in the living room till the staggering lets up, I can't risk him falling down the stairs if I put him back upstairs.

Funny, don't really mind having him in living room all the time, he so far isn't taking liberties with the change in routine yet. (I had thought being downstairs unsupervised all night would lead to some kitchen hi-jinks I'd rather avoid, and so far he doesn't seem interested in his new expanded access. The fortress of solitude is partially disassembled, he doesn't want to hide much any more. That's a good sign, sick kitties want to be in a secure setting hidden away as they know they are more vulnerable.

I have 3 pet beds out, and often as not, he just plunks down on the carpet somewhere. He's a 'digger' so I need to put an old table cloth under the litter box, he tends to get a little enthusiastic in his excavations and the litter box stuff doesn't look like it's Roomba compatible.

I'm hoping transitioning back to dry food isn't going to be an issue, I'm not putting him on canned after this is over, period.

LOL, he was underfoot in the kitchen this AM, obviously jonesing for the canned excrescence.

Well, he ate the last of it yesterday, so I made a big production out of reloading the automatic feeder with his kibble stuff, and lo and behold, he ate it!

On a more sad note, he attempted to jump up on the back of the davenport where I usually sit, and he did manage to get up there, but he immediately must have had the whirlies return as he immediately deploy claws from a splayed posture and was in obvious distress.

This only lasted a few seconds, and then 'plunk' off he went off the back side. Didn't get hurt, but hasn't tried it again either. He wants to get back to his normal routine, and go for him, but we aren't there yet. And this means he still can't go upstairs either, he is too much of a fall risk.

His head is still canted to the right, and while he is improving with his walking, he still keels over from time to time.

We go back to the vet Wednesday.

Vet report:

weighed cat and he's down nearly 2 pounds, no surprise I guess, he went a week without eating after all.

He's still holding head canted down to the right, and while his walking is better, he still staggers and lurches, although actually falling over now is pretty rare, occuring mostly after doing the ear drops.

No injections today.

Did get more antibiotics to syringe, oh goody.

He's definitely getting used to the car ride to and from the vet, LOL.

The automatic feeder is getting way ahead of him with his low appetite, and he is redoubling his efforts to bury the surplus. That it is futile makes no difference to him. (the burying extra food thing is a carry over from his feral experience, BTW)

His attitude about all this remains good, he does clearly feel better. I decided to slowly transition him back to the upstairs, he has access to it, and is litter boxing up there now, and he's done some napping upstairs too. I've watched him on the stairs, and while it isn't pretty, he does show some care in regards to being more careful with his balance still being somewhat wonky.

Another lady was at the vet today and commented on how gorgeous 2 is, LOL. And of course, he has no idea just how sharp he looks, he just loves the attention that accrues.

and we get to go back in 6 days . . .

I'm lucky he's been such a trouper about this, had cats in the past that would not have been good natured about this at all.

Hell, people too, and me included . . .

You're the best Vorls.

Has the vet given a prognosis lately? 1 week, 2 weeks, ...............

Shit, back in the day in my life, #2 would have had a piece of lead with his name on it.

I know from the $$$ so far, it wouldn't have been too many years ago a new cat would have been the solution. Not even an option with this one.

Vet interval is up to 6 days now, and no injections today, so good signs are evident. It's just upsetting he's still walking funny and holding head at an angle.

I know early on he was terrified from the symptoms, and I was able to comfort him about it by just holding him. While I was doing that I could feel his heart racing, and I hoped it was just fear and not something else horrid going on. He calmed down quick enough and maybe I'm reading too much in to this, but I think he feels trusting the vet and me is the best option now.

I realize his convalesce must seem to him as taking forever, I know for me it seems awful. And since coming in to the house, he's never been sick. Since the barf after the first vet trip after he was captured, AFAIK, he hasn't barfed again till this hit. Poor thing, he has to learn about being sick while being sick at this level of severity.
