Why people afraid to ask questions about their beliefs?
August 10, 2016 at 6:31 pm
Hi guys,
Since i becommed atheist, i also began think more critically (more or less ).But why people don't ask questions about their beliefs (not only religious beliefs).I read in one philosophy book that questioning your beliefs is best way to see if they are worth believing in.So what do you guys think, why people don't question on what they hold so dearly, is because of fear, ignorance, or something else ?
Thanks for your answers
If you think your afterlife will be better than your current life, you're not really living. You're just waiting to die.

Fear. If what they believed as true is suddenly some what, or totally, less than or not true then they are lost. Then they will have to face the uncomfortableness of change.
Being told you're delusional does not necessarily mean you're mental.

Have you read book ,,Mastery" if not you should, in that book it was written that when people change something in themselves, their surroundings or beliefs they experience homestasis -our organism's inbuilt resistance to change.

Nope. If you're talking about neurobiochemical allostasis vs homeostasis and the effects of stress/change, I got that.

Because they don't want to hear the answers.

Nope meant I haven't read the book, not that you were incorrect. Sorry for not being more clear. (scientology?)

Because they define themselves by their beliefs, and changing core beliefs would change who they are. That's a kind of philosophical death. And not many people want to die.

I question things constantly. It is fallacious to imply that belief is from a lack of critical thinking or honest, unbiased examination of evidence.
No doubt many come to their faith blindly or without skepticism, however I most certainly did not arrive where I am by anything but the application of logic, reason, extreme skepticism, critical thinking, and such.
This is a great place to have intellectual and philosophical conversations with a diverse crowd.
It helps to not have some of these with family and friends because politics and religion make the turkey taste funny at Thanksgiving.

Atheists are guilty of this as well. Lots of atheists with embarrassing views or who consistently let their biases get the better of them.
