Also good.  

I read "1984" when that was still a decade and a half in the future.  Same with "2001".  It was weird to watch both in-the-future books become dated.  Still well worth the read of course.

Who knows, maybe 1984 is set in the year 2030, and Government simply claims it is 1984.

Good book.  A criticism of wartime and postwar domestic policy and actions in the UK as he saw it. I don't know if it's the best book ever written, but it's pretty good. What did you like about it, particularly, it would help with book recommendations. The dystopian setting? The use of sci fi as commentary? The narrative arc...any particular character? How roughly it parallels the current surveillance state in the UK?

It's been awhile since I read it, but yeah, it's a great book. When I was looking through my grandma's book collection, I found a first edition copy, and she said I could have it. But when my dad saw that I had it, he was like, "Oh, she gave that to me," and he ganked it. I'll get it back someday, though.

I read it along with a few other American classics for English class in school. We had to pair it up with Brave New World because their stories are polar opposites. 1984 is a government that over controls everything while Brave New World's government does not give a fuck lol. We ended up saying that we need government to keep from being Brave New World but we can't let it overrun us like in 1984. I loved both books very much.

Also side note I LOVE that Marilyn Manson quotes 1984!
