To fake conversion or not to fake, that is the question
#11
RE: To fake conversion or not to fake, that is the question
Depends on the person, really. If you think she's equipped to handle that and be happy that you're able to be your authentic self, then be honest. If you think it'd upset her, then play the role; better that than regretting it if (and I hope this isn't the case) she doesn't recover.

And I mean, if all she wants you to do is pray with her, and that is a ritual that gives her comfort, then that's an easy choice: you don't have to believe to engage with something a loved one finds personally fulfilling, really.

Either way, we're here for you if you need us. Heart

One of them I haven't spoken to in about 10 years. Never will. I had an aunt who was like a grandma, but I lost her to cancer. So, this is my grandma in bed, very weak and kind of "out". Doctors watching her say she's tired and depressed. They're looking for other things, too.

Skip the emotional part, because oh mah gah it hurts.

When my aun died, I was holding her hand. She asked me to pray for her. I was still a believer, so I prayed. She was looking up and smiling. She said, "God, my savior, I'm ready for you to take me. All my children will continue for me. Take me home." She then sang worship songs in a state of elation until she passed.

My grandma is a religious fundie. She has hurt at the knowledge that some of us no longer serve the church. So my question is, and oh gawd it hurts to think about it, if she doesn't get better, would you fake a prayer? Would you pretend to believe, so she can pass away comfortably?

Thank you.
So sorry to hear this, Mama.   Sad

To answer your question, I probably would.  We only die once, and if that would help her pass peacefully I'd probably suck up my pride and do it.  But, that's just me.  You gotta do what ever you are comfortable with.

Are you faking a prayer out loud, in her presence, or are faking that you did/will pray but not in her presence?

If it were me, I don't think I could pray aloud in their presence. I could bough my head, close my eyes and fold my hands making it look like I was praying but I would not be able to speak. Maybe she will be OK with you "praying in silence". If she asks if you did/will pray, tell her yes. Pretend. It's not gonna hurt you.

If she asks you to pray for her tell her that you will but you will be praying in your own way, alone, in silence. Comforting but not necessarily a lie.

Best wishes.

I personally would not fake it, but that is just me.

You don't have to.  People cry out to heaven even when they know no ones there to recieve the message, sometimes -because- they know that...just utter desperation. -and you would..wouldn't you, cry out to heaven for -her-, even though she's the only one listening. The prayer is for her, and to her, anyway.

I sang a favorite aunt to sleep, for the last time, with hymnals. The look on her face was worth more than any ideology that might make me give hymnals a sideways look in another context. Sounds like you've been there too...you've seen that. Provide the comfort, it's not for you, you don't have to agree with it. It's a small thing to you, but it probably means the world to her - and in context, it's the last opportunity for something like that you're going to get.

That's the only part that's relevant here. If you love her and feel she would have an easier way out, do all the faking you can muster. That's not in any way a brainy but a wholesale emotional matter.

It's true that it's about her, but at the same time, you'll have to live with the memory of how you were with her in the final moments. So it's about you, too. Don't forget your own needs in a rush to comfort.
