ask a cosmetologist

RE: ask a cosmetologist
I have oily and sensitive skin, and according to others, I have a youthful (20 something) appearance. In addition, if it is of any relevance, I also have a tan/olive complexion.  As a result, what skin care products would you recommend for me (sulfate free if possible)?  Thank you.

Are you acne prone? If so, I would recommend a toner or an astringent on your forehead, nose and chin only.I have the same skin type and use Noxema for daily cleansing.

No, mam.  Besides the occasional little pimple or so, I have never had an acne problem.  I have tried Noxema in the past, and this product seems to dry out my skin and irritate it.  So far, I've found success with a clinique product that is made for people with oily skin.  Would you have any other suggestions besides Noxema? Thanks for taking the time to respond to my question, Nymphadora.

I have a question: how often should I shampoo? I use a conditioner every day since it seems to cut down on flaking but shampooing? Not so much. Maybe weekly. Should I shampoo more often?

If you aren't acne prone, then I would just suggest a light cleanser for daily use. Clinique has some good products, so if you are satisfied with them, I would stick with that. Tea tree oil is good for the skin as well.

My legs get really dry in the winter so I use either Gold Bond lotion or Nivea.

I've never dyed my hair before. I'm brunette. I'm now in my early forties and getting a few grey streaks. It's the only thing that ages me and people still think that I'm 10 years younger than I am. One of these days I'm going to have to start dyeing it. I like to minimise my exposure to chemicals. I also don't ever do anything to my hair. I have a hair cut like once or twice a year and don't even own a hair dryer. So what's the best way to dye hair with minimum work?

That depends on your type of hair, the density, porosity, how it's cut and how much time you're willing to put into maintaining it. If you have a very active lifestyle and want something simple, go with a short style that you can just wash and go. I don't know how long your hair currently is, so without a picture, it's hard to say.

What do think of women who wear no makeup, cut and/or dye their own hair, and shun nail polish?

I find them hot and less toxic.  Oops.  I'm not at all a qualified cosmetologist.

I need a haircut. My hair is wild, grows alot more fast around my ears. Should I let it grow or keep it 2mm high, that seems to be the best bet. My pubes are alot more tameable.
