Special Report on Sexuality and Gender by New Atlantis

RE: Special Report on Sexuality and Gender by New Atlantis
"Some of the most widely held views about sexual orientation, such as the “born that way” hypothesis, simply are not supported by science." Is that why homosexuality is ubiquitous throughout nature? Idk why I even try to argue with religious fuck tards. You find one way to construe something, and they find a million other ways to try to take what you say and act like you're wrong because it doesn't fit their world view. Ohhhhhh but what if that's what I'm doing? Yeah in that case better just back up my bags and go off to straight camp, because I realize my days as a gay are numbered and I aught to just go straight because of course that's what Jesus wants. So much healthier that way.

and yes, that part that I quoted is from the article, I skimmed the conclusion of it, and I think that's bullshit. I didn't finish reading it, but when you find a piece of a writing that compromises the whole thing, I think it's safe to stop and just point that out. If your entire paper is predicated on bullshit like this, idk how you can take it seriously. That paper sure does make a big stink about sounding like it's concerned with scientific accuracy though. Hmmmm we should really investigate these gays, because there could be something wrong with them mentally. Hmmmm. Kiss my ass.

So on this basis we should ignore on all Op-ED pieces?  It's this type of close minded thinking that prohibits rational discussion between people of differing viewpoints.  How can we discuss differing viewpoints if we don't take the time to listen to what the other side has to say?

But what has this to do with viewpoints. That's the problem from the start. It's a group pushing their viewpoints and pretending like its unbiased science.

Seems like people are mostly interested in giving excuses for not wanting to read it or discuss the substance of the article. That's too bad. I had higher expectations for this thread.

Maybe you could start that conversation instead of expecting us to do so. All you did at the beginning was throw a link at us. I've given you my thoughts on the contents. That was more than I owed this thread.
I don't believe you. Get over it.

To be honest, this is bad logic. Homosexuality being ubiquitous throughout nature does not logically mean that homosexual people (or animals) are "born that way".

I suppose not. It still pisses me off that people like OP even try to make this argument. It's like, what the hell are you trying to prove by doing a study like this? So you're trying to prove that homosexuality is a mental illness. Okay, who the hell actually benefits from something like this? This is like saying that black people are genetically inferior and therefor less intelligent than white people, or releasing a study that says jews are naturally more greedy.

It makes me angry. What are you going to do with homosexuals when you finally determine that you think homosexuality arises by some fluke of nature? You're going to encourage anti gay therapy, which is literally still a thing in this country, and you're going to encourage anti gay camps. These are damaging things, for people who can't help the way they feel, that just instill this idea that there's something bad and wrong with them. When you have someone who feels stigmatized and ashamed of themselves for something they can't help, which has literally 0 negative consequences, then you've done nothing but harm that person mentally. That is why articles like this just make me wish that the person who wrote it, and the people who propagate it, would go down a dark alley in the middle of the night and get their head smashed over with a bottle, and the jagged bottle neck rammed into their eye. Period.

Dude, violence might make you feel good, yet would solve nothing. Infact, you might do a martyr. And you know religionists love martyrs.

My take on this is that it's not a fluke of nature. Sexual orientation is part of one's identity, and it may be constant throughout the individual's lifetime (once formed) or it may be fluid. Depends on the individual and circumstances. This goes for all orientations, and not just homosexuality.

But more relevant to your point is that, even if bigots were convinced that homosexual people are born that way, they're not going to be sympathetic all of a sudden. They'd still see it as a fluke of nature, a mental illness to be cured. It's not like racists aren't convinced, for example, that skin color is genetic.

From what I've read recently regarding opinions on the causes of homosexuality (or sexual orientation in general), it seems there are two main camps among the LGBT that seem to conflict with each other even though they shouldn't. I would advise not to focus on the cause(s) of homosexuality (because chances are it's both genetic and environmental, not just genetic or environmental) but rather on your rights as a human being to live your life the way you intend in accordance with your identity.

I didn't imply that I would be violent, I said very specifically and TACTFULLY - like as in I made that distinction consciously in my head, the moment I wrote it - to say that someone else should hurt them, not me. You see what I did there? I'm careful with how I word things, but it still gets me into trouble sometimes. No, I won't lie, it really is a mental exercise of relief to just imagine the most violent thing playing out in my head sometimes, it's it gives me a feeling of satisfaction. I don't want to draw too many parallels to extreme metal music, because this probably would misrepresent a lot of people who's brains don't work exactly like mine; but with that careful indexing of what I'm about to say, I think that i can now say; that I think listening to metal music sort of gives me the same feeling. It's just that feeling of raw energy, just not holding back and doing symbolically what you want to do on the lower level of the reptile brain; in that primitive and ancient part of your brain responsible for survival, to just rip shit up; and have it be controlled by the higher rational part of your brain responsible for civilized society. Like I'm not going to lie, I would love to just beat the fuck out of a homophobe, but I've never been in a fight in my adult life, and I intend to keep it that way.
