My understanding is that Jews considered it to be non literal. I don't take one persons opinions to be authoritative.

To those who believe Bible is not literal...

Quote:Go for it. ok. however, if the debate is going nowhere, I give up. I will start a thread on my pet subject, hell. Quote:This is the heart of the problem whether you are a literalist or not, the whole thing is open to interpretation. If this was the work of a god and it had bothered to author something and or inspire authorship, then you would have expected to see a reduction in religious confusion. Instead we have the opposite. Is that a bad thing? People used to think light was a particle or a wave. It couldnt be both! The important thing is you believe in God and that Jesus lived and died and rose from the dead.
Its ok to have doubt, just dont let that doubt become the answers.
You dont hate God, you hate the church game. "God is not what you imagine or what you think you understand. If you understand you have failed." Saint Augustine Your mind works very simply: you are either trying to find out what are God's laws in order to follow them; or you are trying to outsmart Him. -Martin H. No idea how this helps, other than as a means to tune up the bits that suit most and tune down the less convenient bits.

Shame on you Min, have you become bored with the sandbox or is it the rest of the kids have seen through you and want play with you any more. Yes I'm a fundie, I believe the Bible is literal and why shouldn't I, it's the only way it makes sense. It's not my fault that others do not dig deep into scripture and find the answers that are there. If people don't pray for guidance from God when they read the Bible then how do they expect to be taught the truths contained within it. This is a book that is totally based on the spiritual and how it translates to the physical. Most of the physical we can see but when it comes to the spiritual you need to have a spiritual teacher that is completely knowlegable about the spiritual life. I do go to the greek and hebrew when I need to find understanding about a subject I also do not assume that the ancient times are like today but I do think that people are very similar in so many ways. Min there's no way you could set back and keep your two cents out of it, because you believe your two cents is worth a dollar or two....... I know the dollar isn't worth much any more!!!!!
God loves those who believe and those who do not and the same goes for me, you have no choice in this matter. That puts the matter of total free will to rest.

Thanks Captain Scarlet for clarifying that! Fr0d0, nothing you say ever surprises me I expected that answer or something similar to it from you. Personally I would trust a Rabbi when it comes to biblical interpretation over a Christian any day since Christians don't know shit when it comes to interpreting the bible. And considering that the bible was originally written in Hebrew and Aramaic till the Christians polluted it with Greek and added elements of Roman beliefs and mythologies to it.
There is nothing people will not maintain when they are slaves to superstition

CP if your opinion about christians understanding of scripture were true then what atheist understand is so far less that they should just stop with there comments on scripture..... just following the logical path you know.

Quote:I'm not sure what snake you're talking about I know of no talking snake in scripture.* Umm, I seem to remember a talking serpent (snake?lizard?crocdile?) in Genesis which tempts Eve to eat from the Tree Of Knowledge of Good and Evil. (not an apple tree) From Wikipedia Quote:The serpent tells the woman that she will not die if she eats the fruit of the tree: "When you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil."[6] So the woman eats, and gives to the man who also eats. "Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves aprons." The man and woman hide themselves from God, the man blaming the woman for giving him the fruit, and the woman blaming the serpent. God curses the serpent, "upon your belly you shall go, and dust you shall eat all the days of your life;" the woman he punishes with pain in childbirth, and with subordination to man: "your desire shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over you;" and Adam[7] he punishes with a life of toil: "In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread till you return to the ground." The man names his wife Eve,[8] "because she was the mother of all living." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eve#Temptat...the_garden 00000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 *'your' is possessive, meaning belong or related to you.EG Your car, your brother. The contraction of 'you are' is 'you're' I am=I'm It is= it's possessive (belong to it)=its there is,there are=there's possessive =their they are=they're Common errors even here. I blame incompetent teachers and/or disinterested/stupid students, Because they're simple rules, probably more incompetence than anything else.. |
