Fart was deemed the cause by (supposedly) ruling out everything else. And the burning injuries were from the surgical drape (supposedly) ignited by the ignition of the fart by the laser.
Call me skeptical, but the absorption of energy by a transparent gaseous fart by a visible light laser (I don't actually know that, BTW) would be negligible.
Wouldn't a surgical laser need to be a visible wavelength so the surgeon could see what the heck he's doing with it? An IR laser strikes me as something that would be very difficult to use skillfully. But maybe I'm wrong.
