End the Electoral College?

I can remember hearing that the EC came into being as a way of potentially limiting the damage if a tyrant ended up winning the popular vote, but, of course, this year, that scenario came into being and, ironically, only came to fruition BECAUSE of it.

I've known that the EC needed to be abandoned since Bush's first term, but I can see no possibility of it being abolished, especially with the Republicans benefiting so much from its obvious problems.
