My (probably unpopular) opinion on arab refugees

History has countless examples of the movements of significant numbers of people from one country to the next, and somehow the human race endured. America itself was literally founded by religious immigrants who were seeking a new life away to spread their own brand of religious oppression.
The world is much smaller than we like to admit. And the thought that a government can agree to bomb the shit out of a country, and then refuse to accept the inevitable flow of people looking to escape said bombing of said country, disgusts me to my core.

I know that is what it says in the text books but the fact is that the handful of colonies which were religiously based merely wanted to be free to oppress others who disagreed with their particular variant of jesusism.

The rest of the colonies were founded as commercial enterprises.

I think my daughter had a good response to this, when someone argued something similar.

She said that we should take in refugees, because we hope that someone else would do the same for us if the worst came to it, and we needed someone to care for us and our families. That we'd hope they wouldn't turn us away because where we're from, for our political beliefs, or because of our values. We should look for the best in people, not the worst. We should put people first--regardless of where they're from.

Meh. We have arabic speaking people that moved into the house behind us 8 months ago. The dad only speaks broken english and I don't exactly know where they are from, maybe they don't want me to know. Grandma and grandpa wave at me each day. The wife (at least I think it's wife) never leaves the house/yard and is always dressed in pajama pants. People come and live with them for a month or two and leave again. So far, no better or worse than any other neighbor. Just a little weird. Better than the old fuck that floods my back yard every spring or the druggie family on the corner.

Well, then someone else will either let them in, or take over their war-torn country and use its resources and its population to build their own military power (*cough*Russia). And few years, or decades down the line - you might be facing the same dark-skinned people - not as helpless refugees, but as soldiers and terrorists, perhaps armed with nukes, taught to hate your guts. You think you're scared of them now? If you had some imagination and knowledge of history and if you cared aboutr the future of your children, you'd realize, that Earth is not a very big planet and that it's important to think about long term consequences of decisions.

Now, my replay to Divinity is this one: if I was a refugee, I would be glad if someone helps me. If they dont, I would understand, because 1. They have no responsability whatsoever 2. I am no different from the guy dying next to me.
