Burning it as symbolism and tribute to freedom from the shackles it has held you in is acceptable.
During the 'conversion years' (the time between your brain clicking on and realizing what has been instilled in you from your earliest memorys is bullocks and the time you get rid of that brainwashing effectiveness) I too found myself burning a bible in order to visualize as the pages burnt, so did the lies and religious bullshit turn to ash within my subconscience. As the flames sought out the unburned pages to consume, so did rationality seek out the religious bigotry that was washed into the deepest recesses of my conscience.
It was a symbolic action that served a personal purpose.

I used to tell a lot of religious jokes. Not any more, I'm a registered sects offender.
