Why is the Passing of Carrie Fisher Important?

Why is the Passing of Carrie Fisher Important?
Her death is old news by now but the media tributes to Carrie Fisher still continue. I much admit that as far as celebrity deaths go, hers does not seem significant enough to warrant more than passing (no pun intended) notice. She was an actress of average talent who played a supporting role in three popular movies and a cameo in a fourth movie of the same franchise. It seems like people are actually morning the imagined lose of the fictional character of Princess Leia.

The bonds people make with their fictional heroes can be very strong, and deeply meaningful on a personal (and in the case of such a popular franchise, cultural) level.  You should understand this perfectly well.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

I identified with her problems regarding addiction and psych issues.

Also, then as now, boinking Harrison Ford is on my bucket list . . . .

You're right. At the same time, her personal contribution to that cultural impact seems minimal in comparison to Gene Wilder for example. His achievements came directly from his talent, skills, and effort; hers were derivative. And while their deaths also got a lot of play in the media, Prince and David Bowie were genuinely talented and personally produced large bodies of work. The same with Glen Frey (who I think surpassed both Bowie and Prince) but whose death received disproportionately less attention. And as far as real cultural impact, I would point to Umberto Eco as a sort of celebrity with wide incognitio cultural impact whose passing went largely noticed.

Then you don't get star wars

Umberto Eco's death had a huge impact on European news coverage. I'm pretty sure he was vastly more popular here than he was in the states. It's the other way round with Carrie Fischer and her mom, I assume. Their deaths were reported but rather in passing. There are other artists you probably haven't even heard about that make huge headlines in Europe also.

It's the cult of celebrity, Neo.  Far too many 'murricans find themselves living vicariously through the lives of others and the media merely clamps on to such events for ratings.

The major reason it effects me is i'm a huge star wars fan and being one of the main three really hit me

Same as when Leonard Nimoy died being one of the three of star trek

Don't underestimate the power of an actress who can sell George's awful dialoge. Natalie Portman couldn't do it. Carrie Fisher sold us on her character. But you don't need grand achievements to be important to people. I love Carrie as Leia but I love her as herself more. She was an incredible person.
