What are your thoughts on contractions when it comes to grammar?

RE: What are your thoughts on contractions when it comes to grammar?
I use them occasionally, especially when writing dialogue in a fictional work. I don't use contractions nearly as much as I used to, because in my medical transcription job I have to expand any contractions and abbreviations.

I sha'n't get involved much in this discussion except to say that my decision to use contractions or not is based on the audience I have in mind.

You heard that right:  If a doctor says "can't" or "won't" we have to type them as "cannot" or "will not."  If we get alphabet soup such as "ITP" we have to expand at least the first instance to "idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura."

Don't have a problem with contractions; they're fine with me.
Ain't an issue, as far as I'm concerned.

There's a place near me called "Bottom O' th' moor" I love it when the satnav woman reads it out.  It's like a modern day robot trying to do an impression of an old English northern farmer.

Are you ready for the fire? We are firemen. WE ARE FIREMEN! The heat doesn’t bother us. We live in the heat. We train in the heat. It tells us that we’re ready, we’re at home, we’re where we’re supposed to be. Flames don’t intimidate us. What do we do? We control the flame. We control them. We move the flames where we want to. And then we extinguish them.

Impersonation is treason.

Bolding mine. Does that complaint buff out? Angel  I've always spelled out an item, then put the acronym in parens, when I wrote technical documentation. I especially despise the use of buzzwords in technical literature, as I prefer to eschew verbal obfuscation. Big Grin
