What is it with gays and religion?

I'm smart enough not to hump Aunt Hildie's leg.

Humanity has its disposal the ability to interpret anything how it wishes to interpret it. In that respect, multiple denominations can be created from one single religion. Some gay people do not want to leave the comfort of their faith; therefore, they create for themselves a denomination in which scripture is reinterpreted to suit their needs.

I much prefer a reinterpretation that accepts gay people than the interpretation that god despises gay people.

All religions eventually evolve through the process of reinterpretation, after all, just not all of them in the same ways.

Outdated, primitive scripture has to be reinterpreted in order for the church to maintain its followers faith through the decades of human evolution.

Poor person (being politically correct since actual sex is not mentioned) can't even see a bazaar non sequitur when it jumps up and slaps him/her/it in the face.

There is, of course, no correlation between intellect and sex though they may be intertwined in particular cases.

BTW, Alpha, contrary to your assertion that "atheists tend to think of themselves as intellectuals..." not all atheists think of themselves as intellectuals. Atheists run the whole gamut from intellectually challenged to super hi IQ, think International High IQ Society (previously Mensa International) and beyond.

Sorry but atheist, whether intellectual or not, sexually are not particularly anything more than normal though I suppose some may fall into the categories of Satyr or nymphomaniac i.e. oversexed (whatever that may mean).

Some may even be Eunuchs which sorta restricts copulation. I could have used a four letter word for copulation but sometimes my intellect dis-allows me from swearing.

I find it odd that people associate intellectualism with sexual frequency.  No control?  Sounds like sour grapes.

I'm more confused by gay, lesbian, bisexual and pansexual people who are fundamentalist Christians... meaning they take their Bible literally and yet they still insist that the Bible says absolutely nothing anti-gay in it.

How is that different than all the pious Southern Baptists attending church while wearing mixed fabric clothing and not checking their women folk for menstruation BEFORE allowing them to enter their church building ??

IOW, asserting Literalism is NEVER a reason to ever be personally inconvenienced.

So this good book which grants you everlasting life by the almighty has been discarded because of your hormones!
What's wrong with you? Don't you want to live forever? Sacrificing your immortality for a good time in this life only.

Guys, isn't it blatantly obvious that people are who nature made them to be. No silly books can change that.
People subscribe to these books because they happen to coincide with what they are comfortable with. This of course includes all the bigoted attitudes which people have. It is so convenient to hide your prejudices behind the veils of religion.

If people truly believed that there is a creator who knows all and will judge us one day, their natural survival instincts should at least kick in to protect them from themselves. This does not happen because nature does not recognise or acknowledge any silly made made books... Simples!

I don't get that either. But I'd still value more a liberal LGBT than a gay republican.

Same can be said for the history of African Americans. While today's liberal African Americans are mostly Christians and while they certainly have far more empathy for others than the Tea Party white right Christians, the still ignore that today does not change the biblical based justified slave trade that forced many slaves and their children to convert.

Caitlynn Jenner for example makes no sense to me. She votes republican despite the long history of their anti LGBT positions.

As far as social issues, and concepts of equality, even as an atheist where even many liberal theists can fear that word, I still will take a liberal theist over a right wing theist of any label.

Right wing is right wing and conservatives exist in all religions. I've run into even far right Jews who have hate groups too. There are Jews in Israel depending on individual family or sect that are sexist to the point of holding up airlines because they refuse to sit next to women.

To me the core of our species has individuals who are more empathetic and those who are more selfish and buy into fear. I see that in all camps.

But your posts brings up a really good point.

When a conservative or even a liberal argues, "I wouldn't do that"

The problem becomes that the further back in time you go, the more literally and word for word more people took the bible. So I'd say conservatives are actually more loyal to the book than liberals.

Yea I agree, I see no sense in buying into a book that promotes tribalism especially when it produces individuals who pick out verses in it to justify being a dick to you.

People have control over their sexuality. I don't know why you thought we think otherwise? Is it because we don't think sex is a filthy dirty sin? You talk like you think we are all out raping and gang banging. I think most atheists view sex the same way as most Christians which is that it should be for a monogamous relationship.
