Since I spent several posts bashing OLB's tendencies, I wanted to acknowledge that he posted on another thread something I whole-heartedly agree with. Jimmy Carter was & is a decent human being, despite his religious beliefs. Actually, if more Christians took after Jimmy, I would have a lot more Christian friends. I've read a good deal about Carter and I stick for the guy a lot when a political conversation starts to steer into bash Jimmy territory. Most Americans seem to have a very GOP-curated view of him and the vast majority of it is just flat wrong. Carter didn't make a great POTUS unfortunately, but a lot of the issues he had to deal with were extremely difficult and wide ranging and he made a few mistakes both in policy and politics. But he worked very hard and for the right reasons and issues, and he bucked his own party to keep campaign promises, to his own demise. So OLB should probably like that as well.
I guess that's enough about Jimmy.

It’s always been my impression that Carter was too good a man for politics.

I would say that he didn't approach the Presidency the same way most others approach it, but he was also not as politically savvy as the one's who are more successful. I think the more sincere you are in your intentions, the more susceptible you are to political carnage. Also, he was not all that experienced in politics. He had only served one term as the governor of Georgia and one term in the Georgia state senate.

Trump praises Hitler
In his newly-released book about the 2020 election, Wall Street Journal White House reporter Michael C. Bender reveals that former President Trump allegedly praised Adolf Hitler's role in Germany's economic recovery in the 1930s as evidence that the Führer "did a lot of good things."
It's true the German economy rebounded under Hitler. And he did massively reduce unemployment numbers. But Hitler's "economic miracle" was based explicitly, though not exclusively, on newly-introduced anti-Semitic laws.
Little mentioned among people praising Hitler, of course, was that economic recovery was the direct result of redefining a whole group of people out of the economy. Little mentioned to this day, among people who see Hitler's economy as evidence that he did "some good things," is that terror, abuse and brutality were important engines of the Nazis' economic recovery.
Far from showing he "did a lot of good things," Hitler's rebounding economy revealed the first signs of Nazi horrors to come.

teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

He took lots of unemployed off the streets to build the Autobahn for example. He alternatively could have used more machinery, which is much more efficient, but he didnt.
