And our defense budget increases

RE: And our defense budget increases
You say "before"...private prisons are intentionally overcrowd, they won't even break ground on one without getting specific concessions, in writing, allowing them to do so.  They started out overcrowded by design. The interests that operate them worked in the prison industry before they owned their prisons, and already lobbied for longer sentences and more things classified as crimes worthy of incarceration to drive up need for their support services. Frankly, they weren't interested in -holding- the risk on the prison infrastructure until it had already become immensely profitable.

Corporate greed will use itself. If you come up with a good way to make helping poor people profitbale..... sure...some other organization with better resources will invariably take over - I've already watched it happen to the last thing I was involved in...but ultimately that's a success condition..not a failure condition. They have more resources...if they need your model to make their grifty little nut they'll do it, and people will benefit from it, more people than you or I could ever reach. They simply have no interest in prototyping or doing the initial field assessment. That takes people who want to do it.

Do it, Tara. Do eeeeeet. Change isn't going to come from the top down, from the area both most resistent to change and well equipped or funded to resist and obstruct it for as long as it takes. We little folk have to think about each other, nobody else is doing it. Wink

I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

They already do, at least by pretending to. Companies like Crapita, G4S and Sodexo are making a killing by the creative lack of provision of essential public goods and services to poor people in the UK.

That's exactly the problem.  Whenever billionaires can turn a profit by convincing the government to piss money away on something, we're gonna spend away.  Private prisons aren't much better.  I mean, seriously, remember how Republicans were constantly bitching about government spending when Obama was president?  Now that their man is in charge, the first thing they do is approve funds for more military and a big, ridiculous wall.  Cut government spending, my ass.

Part of me wants to find a way for billionaires to turn a profit by fighting poverty, educating people and expanding healthcare.

I'm wondering if use of the word 'poverty' is stigmatizing or even a form of aggression to those to whom  it applies ?  Maybe we should be fostering an attitude of caution in it's use.  I'm not seeing substantive difference between that word and it's effect and other castigations such as 'crippled', 'retard', etc.
