If evidence for god is in abundance, why is faith necessary?
#31
RE: If evidence for god is in abundance, why is faith necessary?
Human beings aren't rational creatures.  I'm not rational, you're not rational. We're rationalizers who can get nominally better with practice, but that's best case scenario. In any case, my favorite christians don;t carry water for shit. They understand and accept, openly, that their beliefs aren't rational. They have no need to appeal to reason. They appeal to faith and decency. They hold out the hope that they an be or have been redeemed for the awful shit they've done and know they'll do again- by hard work and meaningful repentance. That's -why- they can't bring themselves to hate on the gays, for example. That would just show that they were fallen assholes interested in their personal righteousness but not in goodness. God, in their opinion, would approve of gay marriage, and be disgusted by anyone who sought to prevent happiness and goodwill.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

So simultaneously completely unreasonably guilt-ridden and yet as smug as can be. Sounds like the typical asshole you expect behind every mask of faith. Sorry, dude, they don't get a free pass.
Religions were invented to impress and dupe illiterate, superstitious stone-age peasants. So in this modern, enlightened age of information, what's your excuse? Or are you saying with all your advantages, you were still tricked as easily as those early humans?

Nobody gets a free pass.  They're guilt ridden for the things we should all be guilt ridden for.  The people who wrote those narratives were attempting to pen an opus on the human condition, after all.  Smugness....I can't find a trace.

I'm not looking to make an excuse for our resident apologists, or any apologist, only mentioning that they're the fucking dregs of christendom. We're more familiar with the dregs because they make it their livelihood or hobby to talk shit.

Really? Because they think they're in possession of that special little secret denied to us, that it merits them deserving of forgiveness for all their bullshit, with that fucking facade of guilt? Can't believe you could have missed that. The slightest declaration of faith is a direct middle finger to everyone who doesn't share that with them. I give it right back and then some. If they can't figure out that they're being fucking smug, they can eat whatever falls out of my ass. On second thought, even if they can figure it out, they can still eat that. If they're not going to stop it, they get no quarter.

Yeah, so...my point is, that the True Christians™ -don't- think that.  That's one of the ways you can tell the difference between a devout person and an insecure religious dolt.

...What? First, I don't even get what the fuck you mean by 'true xtian', and second, I fail to see why, just on the assumption I have about what that might mean, they wouldn't be the most likely to espouse that belief either subconsciously or consciously, and third, it doesn't matter what level you're at, if you think you're right about it, you're fucking making the statement that you know something someone else doesn't. Smug AF. At every level. Ergo, fuck 'em all. But it's like I've said, it's mere madness, not stupidity. They're perfectly capable of changing and I'm happy to not make a big deal out of it after. So with that in mind, un-fuck them if they recover from their condition.

Buddy, lol, none of the people I'm referring to think they know anything that anyone else doesn't.  Am I not making that clear? Their "condition" is decency for whatever reason. It may be no reason, or a poor reason...but so what? Better than the inhuman shit for reasons god related and not god related people get up to nonsense for. They believe that they'll be judged for inequity. They're right about that, even if they're wrong about the adjudicating body.

Then in what way do they 'believe'? You have to at least be convinced that you know or have reasonable certainty about something to believe it. Or are we fucking about with definitions again? Faith being a belief, implies knowledge warranting said belief (as shitty or spurious as it may be). I don't know what the fuck you're talking about otherwise. If they don't actually have faith, and just say they do, then they're just morons. Still don't deserve respect for it.

People, religious or otherwise, with an ounce of integrity - can separate belief from knowledge.  I believe that my sons will grow up to be fantastic human beings who will never be arrested for murdering someone with the claw end of a hammer.  I don't know that (and..every day, they present evidence to the contrary..I'm starting to worry that I'll have to perjure myself on the stand at some point in my life in service to my sons. I will, ofc, fuck whoever's head they cave in with a hammer, these are my sons).  Similarly, the people I'm referring to believe in a god, but they don't bullshit anyone about knowing it, or seeing evidence everywhere they look.

It takes a certain amount of oomph to accurately identify your beliefs for what they are and maintain them regardless. I find a certain amount of respect in this..you may not, and that's okay.

I see you like Christians who do not bother you with a witness and have no concern about your eternal destination. You like Christians who sit around and do little of what the bible instructs us to do. Who said any of us here hate on the gays, that would be your opinion of us because we believe what the word of God says, not in how we associate with gays.

That faith is needed in the religious community reasonably means that zero evidence is in existence to prove god is real.

The other Christians here have said it well and that does mean I agree with each one. They have summed it up well.

God loves those who believe and those who do not and the same goes for me, you have no choice in this matter. That puts the matter of total free will to rest.
