Apple breaks new ground in squeezing yokels for huge tax breaks by offering almost no jobs

Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds and the mayor of the tiny suburban town of Waukee (population 13,800) Thursday basked in the glory of sharing a podium with Apple CEO Tim Cook. They announced that Apple would build a $1.3 billion data center in the little town.

They should have hung their heads in shame instead. Apple took Waukee to the cleaners, and its taxpayers will pay the bill. The politicians talked as though the data center would put Waukee on the map as a first-class high-tech center. The truth is that it will mark Waukee as a first-class patsy.
To bring the project home, Waukee and the state are giving Apple about $208 million in tax abatements. For that, they're getting a plant that will employ a permanent workforce of 50 people.

Fifty. That works out to $4.16 million per job.

Congratulations, Iowa.  You've got a real fucking genius running the show!

They might be lucky to find 50 workers to staff facility.

Around here companies are advertising for workers and not getting too many applicants. I saw a McDonalds the other day with a sign outside wanting help. And yes, they are paying more than min wage.

Another issue with scarce workers is if you do get someone to interview they might not pass a pee test . . .

Oh, 90% of that staff Apple will bring in from elsewhere. The other 10% is janitorial/administrative.

There are long term benefits to Data Centers, they pay a LOT in sales/franchise taxes to the utility. I don't think they're worth the massive tax break they were given. The only other benefit is attracting future business. Being near a data center has benefits for other companies as well.

Full Employment: Are We There Yet?

The Bureau of Labor Statistics’ April jobs report showed that for just about a year straight, unemployment has remained under 5 percent. That’s laudable, considering the fact that unemployment surpassed 10 percent during the height of the recession. Now, some are saying the streak of low unemployment means that the country has reached a big post-recession goal: full employment, which many economists loosely define as the point where everyone who wants a job has one. This is, essentially, how economists ask whether this is as good as it gets for labor markets. But is America really there yet?
