What??????

Look, if theists can be delusional then so can I.

Why not today then?

No shower, no coffee, no poop yet. I do have some priorities that are impervious to delusion.

People will abandon religion around the same time they abandon homoeopathy, astrology, crystal healing, tarot... Never!

And welcome to the forums.

So much so that in some countries atheism is the majority. However on the global scale theism still dominates atheism. We do see the young are far less likely to be theists, and the numbers of atheists there lend support to my idea that theism is dying. So the question is this at what year do you think atheism will become the majority on the global stage?

Today neither atheism or theism dominate.
Today materialism dominate.

Most people today wouldn't care less whether God exist or not.
With the imminent collapse of the capitalism which is just a question of when, plus the disasters caused by climate changes that are wrecking the planet, the wars, the poverty, the injustices and all other evils most people will dump both materialism, atheism and religions in favor of spirituality which is the only solution out  this disaster that we are experienced right now and that will exacerbate more and more.
Those who will survive this disaster will certainly dump all the rubbish that they worship so far in favor of a drastic change for the better.

This is my understanding.  Lightbulb

In the course of 7 years atheism has doubled from 1.6 to 3.1 in the U.S. That's an impressive change.

The article covers some of the other issues with defining athiest and the misuse of the term in general.

On the world scene we see much the same.

The article goes into some of the roadblocks to a wider acceptance of atheism.

There's a continuum of belief to non-belief.

While in the past, I think a good case could be made the peak of the curve was lodged pretty tight towards the 'pious' end of spectrum. Nowadays, it would be tough to find anyone that I would consider 'pious', the slackerism and cherry picking of strictures to comport to is absolutely endemic now.

In Europe?  In the Far East?  In North America?  Or World-Wide?
Certain places are embracing the change more quickly than others.  These places (like Scandinavia) have higher standards of living:  better education, health care, better work environments.  Places that still struggle with poverty are more religious.

I can hope that most of America will be atheist by . . . oh . . . 2040.  It's possible.  But there will be pockets of believers, and all sorts of alternative woo popping up everywhere.

I think America will increasingly segregate into areas of atheist majority in more productive, educated, wealthier and more highly cosmopolitan areas on the coasts, and more religious hinterland dominated by those who can't and won't improve themselves, but who nonetheless feel entitled for heritage, racial and ethnic reasons, and resent those who could usurp them through skill, flexibility and merit.

What is encouraging is not necessarily suitable for linear extrapolation.
