It is possible that I have austrian ancestors
October 17, 2017 at 9:19 am
My dad was born in a village which was colonised by austrians during the Austrian-Hungary empire. I know for sure that some non blood relatives have had german names, but I don't know if I have austrian DNA. I don't care much about this, but my father sure does.Romania used to be communist, then the regime has sent some austrian minorities to Siberia, including an oncle and an aunt of his. They were eventually sent back during dad's youth and he heard from them what they've been through. Today he told me this, for the millionth time (he didn't repeat himself 1 000 000 times today, he repeats himself since last two years). He also said: "We have austrian blood so we have all the rights to live there and be catholics. Many germans don't know how it is to suffer because of your nationality. I hate communists for what they did. My oncle and aunt were both orthodox and catholic, so if we should keep the tradition on. I would be very happy if you became both orthodox and catholic. Only if you want to, I'm not forcing you!". I'm kind of happy he doesn't force me, but if I were to refuse I don't know what arguments I can bring. I can't tell him now I'm atheist, since I'm not financially stable. I thought that maybe I should go to Catholicism now, to make him happy, and tell him later I'm atheist.
I do agree that the communists were assholes, they've sent people to concentration camps for simply being of german heredity, but it's the past, we should move over. Father is still suffering about this. If it's hard for him to get over this, why doesn't he seek help? He has a family, we are willing to help. He can go to a therapist. He does this to all things that make him sad, instead of trying to move over, he keeps them inside and then bursts.
Also, the austrian pride part makes me wanna laugh, having austrian DNA doesn't automatically make anyone awesome. In fact, dad doesn't show many austrian, or german, stereotypes for that matter.

So you dad thinks he has austrian blood. Did you ever ask him how much grandma got around? hehehehe
Genealogy does not let you cross national borders, at least not that I've heard.

I know it, today you can cross borders from Romania everywhere in Europe. He knows it too, he just likes to think highly of himself.

Your dad one of those blood and soil types of catholics? We have a different name for them over here, especially the austrian kind....and have since the 40's.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

He's orthodox, but he'll convert to Catholicism soon, wants two sects.

Ouch, 0/10 Godwins..I swing and miss, lol. In any case, people often want to understand..or even connect to the faiths of their fathers. Your father obviously does, and it's no surprise that you do as well, insomuch as you do and can.
You were mentioning that you didn't know what arguments to bring. Do you need to? Wouldn't a simple "No thanks" suffice? Part of being an adult is having the will to go your own way...and your father would probably agree.

I still depend financially on him, and knowing him, he would most likely ask me why if I refuse.
Also, I've already told him today that I will do the conversion. Inside I'm still atheist, I will tell him that when I'll be financially stable. Then he will be more upset than he would if I refused the conversion, but I don't really care. He forces me to do alot of things I don't like and can be selfish, my mom is sometimes angry at him too. Granted, he does have qualities, he did nice things to me. And he is proud of me now, maybe I'll gain something out of this.

Well, ships sailed then, hasn't it. Good luck coming out later, especially after the "if you don;t want to" proviso. I think you're right, he might be even more upset...but oh well.
