Ex-Christians: How do you lose your fear of hell?
#21
RE: Ex-Christians: How do you lose your fear of hell?
It's as simple as this:

The concept of Hell is the most evil thing imaginable. If we live in a universe created and ruled by a cretin so evil as to come up with something like Hell, we are fucked. It doesn't matter if you bow down and suck his dick or not. Do you really think a being so evil it would torture people for eternity for the trivial crime of not believing in him would be kind to you if you did suck his dick? Why? It is evil!

In the Christian worldview, we are created beings, created by God - an all-knowing creature. If God is all-knowing, he KNEW our fate when he created us! If he knew we were destined to Hell (which he created) then why create us in the first place?!

The concept of Hell is absurd. God is punishing people for behaving in ways he KNEW they would behave when he created them! It's as if I built a car with a wooden dowel for a steering rod KNOWING it would fail at some point and then blaming the driver for the resultant accident! It's not the driver's fault! I gave him a car I KNEW was unsafe. The accident is on ME!

Sleep like a baby, KiwiNFLFan. You're good - at least when it comes to life. You being an NFL fan is another matter. Even then though. you need not worry about a tortuous afterlife. You still should concern yourself with the consequences of playing American Football in this life. But that's another story.
Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former.

But, here’s the thing - there’s no proof of hell, heaven, or any other kind of afterlife.  Just unsupported, and, frankly, foolish assertions written by superstitious ancient people.

There is literally nothing to fear regarding any kind of afterlife.  Such a thing doesn’t exist.

To add to this, just go research the concept of hell. If you read far enough, you will see that the concept evolved over time. What the "hell" is up with that? It's all made up shit to keep the plebes in line. The Catholic church has evolved their beliefs over time. Wasn't the FIRST shit right? Obviously not, and not much has changed.

Any more, whenever I see a question like this, I am reminded of the question about how many angels can dance on the head of a pin. It's fucking nonsense, all the way down to the core. No offense meant, btw.

Man, oh man. I remember that phase. I felt heartbroken. I felt abandoned. I felt like I was standing alone on a cold planet and nobody could hear me. And the fear of being wrong and going to hell was not helping.

Then I turned to logic. Which god’s punishment was I fearing? I had understood that it was obnoxious to believe the Christian god was the one and true god, just because I was raised in a Christian church, so... then what? What if Zeus was the true god and his punishment was worse? What if the true god was the godess Nike and her punishment for us was to send us to war against aliens? I mean... it could be anything by any god and how are we supposed to know? Lol and then it was just funny and I lost the fear and replaced it with freedom. Feels good, man.

Yeah, wasn't one of the first stories about hell just about this valley that was set on fire, and continued burning? So unless someone's going to drag my old self down to Jerusalem, or wherever that valley is, and throw me in, then the threat of hell doesn't mean much. Certainly nothing in the afterlife, unless people think that pit is haunted.

Well don't they also have their own versions of bigfoot, dragons and elves does that also mean that one should belive in them too?
Also these other afterlives had other conditions one had to meet like dying with sword in your hands or dying in suicide mission killing infidels, not eating pork, not eating cows and so on.

But maybe you do suffer from some psychological disorder like Apeirophobia which is fear of infinity and afterlife.

teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

Imagine putting a finger on a hot pan. Then your whole body is under same feeling and it might last very long. Some believers go as far as suggest it's eternal. But when stakes are put so HIGH, I can't name a sin that would give you ETERNAL punishment or the which lasts long.

Imagine wearing protective gloves and then putting a finger on a hot pan.
Then your whole body is under same feeling ==> nothing
and it might last very long ==> boredom

Yes hot things cause pain, provided you have skin to touch with, nerves to carry the signal, and brain to interpret it, all of which however are non-existent in a soul/spirit.

Imagine all those sadism worshipers become religion free, it's gonna be hell. Pray it never happens.
