Life is nothing

"Love" is the label that humans apply to a set of emotions, caused by a series of chemicals released in our brains.

There are a minority of people, sociopaths for example, that do not have the ability to create some of these chemicals. And guess what? They don't feel love.

The fact that love can be explained through neuroscience, does not detract one bit from the feelings. In fact, it makes it all the more amazing.

No magical ghost in the machine necessary. Biology for the win!

You'd believe if you just opened your heart" is a terrible argument for religion. It's basically saying, "If you bias yourself enough, you can convince yourself that this is true." If religion were true, people wouldn't need faith to believe it -- it would be supported by good evidence.

RE: Life is nothing
Apart from our biological imperative, we give our lives meaning ourselves. Not some mythical being that will slap us or reward us according to it's rather schizophrenic will.

You say you're agnostic, but you come across, at least in your initial post, exactly as I've seen many fundamentalist Christians do. I've seen this sort of statement on boards such as Rapture Ready and others, where people wonder why they should bother getting an education, or a job, if they're just going to die and go to heaven.

The world is as we have made it. Many of us need an education and a job to get through it, not only to benefit ourselves but those around us, whether family or community.

It's many of the religious who want to stop people becoming educated, thereby having hordes of unthinking sheep to follow them.

You hate atheism? Frankly, I don't give a rat's arse.

Atheism is the rejection of god claims.

If you really believe this, you'd have had a gun to your temple as you typed and be dead before you read  this reply. People who criticize the purpose of life tend to have an uncanny survival rate.

Interesting.

I was going to answer here, but I decided to make another thread on the matter.

So don't sell yourself short yet, we may be able to engineer ourselves into obsolescence with (or without) endless future comfort!

We are all just patterns in the void... fun isn't it.

"We control the world basically because we are the only animals that can cooperate flexibly in very large numbers. We cooperate effectively with strangers because we believe in things like gods, nations, money and human rights. Yet none of these things exists outside the stories that people invent and tell one another. There are no gods in the universe, no nations, no money and no human rights—except in the common imagination of human beings. You can never convince a chimpanzee to give you a banana by promising him that after he dies, he will get limitless bananas in chimpanzee Heaven. Only Sapiens can believe such stories. This is why we rule the world, and chimpanzees are locked up in zoos and research laboratories."

All the things you say are very true, but this is the pessimistic way of looking at it.
Life isn't about the result. Religion has you believing it's about going to heaven or hell, but it's not. It's about the moment. I mean, technically, it's not about anything because it doesn't matter. But to people it should be about the moment. Because this moment is all we have, and we can do whatever with the moment. To me, this is what life is about. It's about embracing that we do have a short time that will come crashing down in the end, and it will be so insignificant if you look at the big picture, but I will make it mean something to me. And the meaning of life can be whatever I want it to be, because it's my life. But the only time I have to decide that is right now, because this moment goes fast and I'll never get it back, so I better spend it doing what I want to do because I will never have another chance to embrace it.
Living for the moment rather than the result(heaven or hell) has made life so much more meaningful to me. Because I'm living for me, and that's a meaning of life that makes so much more sense to me rather than a life where the purpose was to serve a God. Now that is what seemed pointless.

Terrifying, isn't it? Ripping off that soft warm comfort blanket even for a moment and realising that there's nothing beyond it. No purpose, no meaning, no happy ending after death, no benevolent creator watching over us and showering us with love. A bolt-like realisation of oh shit, I'm not special after all.

Much safer under the blanket. Better keep hiding under there. You've glimpsed what really lies outside for a split second, how could you live your entire life within it? You'd never cope, but it's not your fault that you're not cut out to live life without a safety net. It's alright. Go back to sleep.
