Funny how the theist, will try to retrofit modern knowledge to the past. If it worked like that we should all worship Shakespeare as a prophet for that line.

Shakespeare could not have, back then, known how right he was about our place in "all this". Intuitive sure, but hardly modern knowledge.

BUT to be fair, I also hate it when si fi fans pull this shit about TV shows and movies being "predictors" of the future. Like those into "Back To The Future" and "Star Trek" fans make claims about the creators and writers being the inventors.

But it is far worse with religion because each claims to be the patent holders on religion and morality.

Define a soul, and then explain why it is a prerequisite for emotions.

Oh, and quit importing your unquestioned premises into the discussion.

I think it's a great question.  Though I imagine it's a better question for Mikey than anyone else.  Just how -can- he love without a soul?  Inquiring minds want to know.

I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

I think it was Asimov who said that the job of the science fiction writer is not to predict the future, but to prevent it.
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist.  This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair.  Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second.  That means there's a situation vacant.'

Sci-fi doesn't necessarily predict. It does, however, inspire.

Love is in our brains (particularly our limbic systems, which we have in common with other mammals), and we at least have enough of those to type responses to your queries. It's literally how we feel everything. Imagining a 'soul' on top of that doesn't change the way we feel by a jot or a tittle.

This isn't a mystery. An icepick to the right part of your brain can sever the part of you that loves your spouse or child. If you loved 'with your soul', a physical injury could not change that.

Love is real because it is a feeling, and you really feel that feeling. That it's chemical and electrical in nature doesn't keep you from feeling it, or from being real. In fact, it's nonsensical that adding 'just a bunch of spirit stuff' to it would make it more real than it already is. It would be like enhancing the flavor of your cereal by sprinkling invisible immaterial pixie dust on it. You have to show that it exists in the first place to be able to claim it makes a difference.

^^^THIS^^^  In spades.  Emotions are a brain function.  There are thousands of documented cases of people losing emotions after a brain injury - in fact, that's why lobotomies were created.  This would never happen if emotions were a function of a "soul".   Kudos, MA!    Logic Thumb up
