I think what CL said was perfect about cops. Every group has a set of bad people, we can't handicap cops all over the country because some are bad. No cop would feel safe enough to work and the system would break.
Yep if my husband/brother/father were cops, I sure as heck would hope they have guns with them while on duty.

I carried two when I was hunting deserters. The standard issue five-shot "Chief's Special" and a 15-round Ruger. Only had to fire once in three years.

So you want more restrictive laws for police ?
Before you say that , come to Romania and you will se how 4 dudes beat the crap out of you and the police can't do anything , until our SWAT equivalent comes , you will be taking a beating.

Or come to the UK where police do not carry guns and still manage to maintain law and order.

Police officer describes how he took on all three London Bridge terrorists with just a baton
Quote:‘Three of them were standing together almost shoulder-to-shoulder in like a little wolf pack, and they’re staring at me. And that’s when I get to size them up’
Quote:A police officer has told how he fought off all three London Bridge attackers with just his baton after being blinded in one eye as they swiped at him with their knives.

I think there's more violent crime here. Much larger country, more people, and a lot more diversity. Just because cops with no guns works in England doesn't mean it would be a good idea here in the US. Cops need guns here to be able to defend themselves and others, because many criminals here have guns. In some neighborhoods here it's normal to hear gun shots from gangs going off at night. No way would we send an unarmed man to deal with that.

If you bring in strict gun laws then eventually it will be unusual to hear gun shots from gangs going off at night.
American police may never give up their guns, but it is possible that one day they won't ever need them. After all, in Germany, cops do routinely carry guns but very few ever get to use them in practice.

As it stands now, the police here need them. If there comes a point where they don't need them anymore, than we can reevaluate.
