Who is it that you fear will invade us or make open war with us? Al Qaida? Fighting them requires intelligence gathering, commando strike teams and careful diplomacy, not any army built to fight the Soviet Union.
The Soviet Union is gone. The Cold War is over. Yet we've continued to escalate our defense budget since Reagan. It's like we're in an arms race with ourselves.
It's also a matter of raw numbers. You want to cut spending to reduce the debt? It aint gonna happen if you take defense off the table. The numbers just aren't there. There isn't 700 billion that you can cut out of the budget any other way.
Perhaps you'd prefer tax hikes? "Guns or butter" as the saying goes, a theist, you can't have both.

I am so glad that I don't have to go thru life completely terrified of everything that is different than I, like you & your ilk so obviously do. What are you so scared of? We could cut defense spending in half & still have the largest, most powerful military on the planet.
Why so scared?

Oh, but he can in magical fairy-tale world where gods are real & will balance the budget for you if you just pray hard enough.
