Give my Preacher cousin his 15 minutes of fame

RE: Give my Preacher cousin his 15 minutes of fame
(February 16, 2018 at 9:44 pm)RoadRunner79 Wrote: First a small suggestion.  While I do like the idea of sourcing the quote (particularly if you are going to give names).   In that situation, I would ask myself, what am I trying to accomplish by giving a name and facebook (basically giving an address for this person)?  What is the goal of all this?  Asking people to anonymously put this out there seems a little scary to me.  The mob is stupid and often angry now days, and you may get more than you intended.  You said, you still talked to this cousin (I don't know if that means that you like this family member), but even if you don't , consider what could be the consequences.

That said,  I hate when people do this.  And it seems like the ones who do; do so every time (unless it is them who falls on misfortune).  Whether it's a natural disaster, or the evilness of man, these things are not always to be considered a punishment, or that they where worse a sinner than you are.  If talking to another Christian, I would ask them why they felt the need to speak this, and caution them about taking the Lords name in vein.  It looks bad, and if they are not speaking for God, but just guessing, then it is very bad (false prophets where never looked upon well).

Now a suggestion;   I didn't look at the Facebook link, which I see you added later.  But most of what I disagree with, I believe  is you talking not your cousin.  I think that it would be better if you used direct quotes more.  While what he said (that you quoted) certainly makes me pause, and ask questions, it's not necessarily that bad.  Was there more that was said, or are you making a liberal interpretation.  It is difficult to tell, and you would probably be better letting him speak for himself.

I guess I'll be the odd atheist out and say that I agree with this.

Look. I get that we're all angry about what happened down in Florida. It was a senseless tragedy that shouldn't have happened. In the last two decades, the number of tragedies that continues to happen in the US is astounding. We should be mad because no one in government wants to seriously address the gun problems and the mental health issues that allow these things to happen. People in power don't want to do anything that takes away from their ability to keep getting re-elected. They don't care about their constituents or the people that vote for them and as long as this is the general attitude of those making the laws in this country, things will never change.

Thoughts and prayers are not the answer and I cannot stand when religious people, especially those in a position of power and influence, use these sorts of acts to spread their religious opinions and try to scare people into believing in their brand of woo. It's disgusting.

But as disgusting as it seems, we all have a responsibility to do the right thing. Posting the offensive person's personal information here, where they are not a member and cannot possibly give consent or objection, crosses a line no matter how wrong the cousin is in his sermon or his Facebook post. In the long run, it puts the cousin in potential harm and no one has the right to put another individual in harm's way. This is a publicly viewable website so literally any "guest" lurking here can take that information and do what they wish with it.

Clearly, there's been enough information contained within this thread that repeatedly gives the person's name and profile picture, now searchable on Facebook, and the name of the church, along with the city and state the church is located in. The original post by the cousin, on Facebook does NOT do this so it isn't right that his information was posted in a meme on these forums, unbeknownst to him or without his consent. This has become more than just wanting to spread a message. It's now an invitation for trouble.

I'm honestly saddened that while some staff have willingly participated in this thread, none of them have taken down the images, knowing that they clearly violate the rule on Doxing here. This thread was created two days ago and we should let it stay up for discussion, because religious people using a tragedy to spread their agenda, is a real-world issue, but by all means - every instance where the images and memes of this person's personal information appear, should really be removed. I realize that my opinion means squat with regards to this, but seriously - if this was a theist who had done the something similar with regards to an atheist's personal information, everyone would have lost their shit over it and been demanding that person be banned.

Do the anti-abortion folks ever vet the fetuses they're marching about ??

It would tend to sully them in the eyes of their Lord God Almighty if they are advocating for pre-damned souls.

Why is it so hard to do Christianity correctly, BTW ??

And then, according to the fairy tale, every human is born filthy and evil because the first woman ate an apple.

OK, I obviously cannot remove the images I posted.  If staff members would remove the images in #13, and the Facebook image in the OP, I would appreciate it.  We see lots memes made from public statements made by public figures - and my impression was that a Facebook post made by a preacher certainly qualified.  I still think that such repulsive views should go viral and receive the appropriate attention.  And I know that this preacher would jump at the chance to gain some media attention. But apparently people are worried that his church will be firebombed and that I'm violating his privacy - so . . . please remove them.  Maybe just keep the first meme, the one without the name and Facebook link.

At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist.  This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair.  Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second.  That means there's a situation vacant.'

You are looking at this wrong. How would you like it if someone else plastered your personal info on a forum that was accessible to anyone? It's one thing to repost the persons post, while respectfully blocking out personal info. It's quite another to ask people to spread info about that person which could create a harmful situation.

You are correct Joods.  I started by only posting the info with the church name, but then added the name and link without thinking it through.

It happens. I just didn't want to see you get banned over it.

Honestly?  I think the doxing rule here is too strict.  A public post made on a publicly viewable FB page shouldn't be considered doxing.  It's obviously not information the person wants to keep private.  If they did, they'd make their page/post only viewable to friends.  Or, better yet, not post something that could be considered inflammatory on the internet at all.  For my money, there's no legitimate expectation of privacy if you're writing stupid shit for the world to see.

Regarding the harassment aspect, I can see it, but I think it's well within a person's rights to take a community leader to task for promoting regressive, tone deaf rhetoric which tastelessly attempts to use the deaths of innocent kids as a way to drive up church recruitment numbers.  The guy said it, so he should own up to it.

That said, there's no way to limit damage if these images are spread.  The internet is global, and people will do stupid shit under the shield of anonymity.  Ideally, drfuzzy would/will tell this guy exactly what kind of asshole he is personally.

So, I see nothing wrong with tying the quote to the post to show that, yes, it's real.  I do think the potential of unintended consequences should stop it from being spread.

Just my $0.02.
