Personally, I don't think priesthood creates pedophiles. I think pedophiles want to be priests so they can be part of an organization where no one will suspect them and even if they get caught, the organization will protect them.

And my insane Catholic family wonders why I don't introduce my 5 year old son to religion and church. It would be safer to throw him in a pool of sharks over Sunday school any day.

Perhaps both play a factor? I'm not a criminal psychologist but I can't help think that a sexual predator would be draw to a career where they have access to potential victims, would be considered beyond suspicion and be protected in the event of getting caught. This seems to me the simpler explanation but I'll defer to those who've done the research.

It would be hard to confirm that, considering that pedophilia is an under-reported crime. I'm sure they will say so, it gives a nice cover for their behavior, but how could we know for sure?
